STANDISH, Maine -- Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Hawkes (Pownal, Maine/Freeport) and freshman outside hitter Sarah Coffey (Hanover, Mass.) each had 11 kills to lead the St. Joseph's College Monks to a 3-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women's volleyball match at the Alfond Center Thursday night. The Monks defeated the Huskies 25-14, 25-18 and 25-10.
The loss was the fourth straight for the Huskies who fell to 6-22 overall. The Monks improved to 17-11 with the win.
Joining Hawkes and Coffey with double-digits kills was freshman outside hitter Brooke Dyer (Lebanon, Maine/St. Thomas Aquinas), who had 10. Sophomore Kiah Begley (Berwick, Maine/St. Thomas Aquinas) led the Monk offense with 29 assists.
Senior outside hitter Shannon Shuttle (New Ipswich, N.H./Mascenic Regional) had three kills and six digs to lead USM. Senior setter Danielle Netland (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) had 10 assists and five digs.
Southern Maine returns to action on the road at Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday (12:00 p.m.). St. Joseph's College travels to Rivier College on Saturday (11:00 a.m.).
