Huskies Swept by Bates 3-0

GORHAM, Maine – The University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to the Bates College Bobcats on Tuesday night at home. Sophomore Lizzy Harbester (Plympton, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) led the Huskies with five points on three kills, a solo block and two block assists.
 
Freshman Sofia Daoud (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) recorded nine digs to lead the Huskies, while sophomore Reese Helisek (Halifax, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) had five assists.

Bates holds a 71-6 lead in the all-time series.
 
How It Happened:
  • Down 3-1 early in the first set, the Huskies used a 5-0 run to go up 6-3 thanks in part to a pair of aces by Daoud. Bates then tied the set at 6-6 before kills by Anyelis Hernandez (Lawrence, Mass.) and sophomore Haylie Bidegain (Logan, N.M) put the Huskies back ahead 8-6. However, the Bobcats quickly retook the lead with a 5-0 run of their own and stayed ahead for the rest of the set for a 25-19 win.
  • The Bobcats took the second set 25-10 behind 14 kills in the second frame.
  • The sweep was completed with a 25-14 win by the Bobcats after they pulled away from a 6-6 tie with a 5-0 run.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Bates had a 39-13 lead in kills and a 9-7 lead in aces. Daoud and Bidegain each had two aces for the Huskies.
  • The Huskies led 5-4 in blocks. Harbester, Bidegain and sophomore Scarlett Squires (Mount Desert, Maine/Mount Desert Island) each had two block assists for the Huskies.

The Huskies will host Covenant College (12:00 pm) and University of Maine, Presque Isle (4:00 pm) in a tri-match on Saturday.
