GORHAM, Maine – The University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's volleyball team went 1-1 on Saturday at a home tri-match. The Huskies lost in straight sets to the Covenant College Scots 3-0 before sweeping the UMaine Presque Isle Owls 3-0 to end the day. Sophomore
Haylie Bidegain (Logan, N.M) led the team in kills with 10 in the win over UMPI, while sophomore
Reese Helisek (Halifax, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) recorded 18 assists and
Alexis Tortola (Rowland Heights, Cali./Bishop Amat) recorded 15. Helisek also logged five aces in the win.

Sofia Daoud (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) recorded a team-leading 19 digs against UMPI. Sophomore
Taylor Joyal (Nashua, N.H./Nasuha North) had eight kills and eight digs in the win.

Today's match was the first time that the two programs have played each other.

How It Happened:
- Covenant won the opening set 25-10 behind 12 kills and four aces. Henley Gentry accounted for three of the aces for the Scots.
- The Scots went up 2-0 with a 25-23 win in the second set, despite strong effort by the Huskies to tie the set at 23-23. Â
- Covenant completed the sweep with another 25-10 win in the third set to take the match.

- The Scots had a 39-18 lead in kills and a 14-4 lead in aces.
- Southern Maine led 4-3 in blocks thanks to two block assists by Bidegain and solo blocks by sophomore Scarlett Squires (Mount Desert, Maine/Mount Desert Island) and senior Anyelis Hernandez (Lawrence, Mass.).
- Joyal led the Huskies with eight digs and tied with Hernandez for the most kills on the team with five.

Today's match was the first between UMPI and USM since 2022. The Huskies lead the series 30-23 and have won the past 13 meetings.

How It Happened:
- The Huskies broke a 13-13 tie with a 5-0 run that featured a pair of kills by Hernandez, a kill by Squires and a Helisek ace to go up 18-13. They then closed out the match on a 5-1 run capped by a Bidegain kill to win 25-18. Junior Casey Murillo (League City, Texas/Clear Falls) had three kills in the set.
- Bidegain added five additional kills in the second set as part of a 25-17 win by the Huskies. Senior Kylee Eubanks-Hemme (Rosamond, Cali.) and Joyal each had three kills.
- After the Owls took a 12-10 lead thanks to a 5-0 run, the Huskies countered with an 11-0 run to regain the lead and go ahead 21-12. Helisek had four aces in the run, three of which came on consecutive serves. Bidegain had two kills during the stretch.
