Big Second Half Propels Southern Maine Past UMFK

GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore Lexi Morin (Brunswick, Maine) had two goals and an assists in the second half to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 4-3 win over the UMaine Fort Kent Bengals in a non-conference women's soccer game Wednesday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
 
Morin scored the game-tying goal and assisted on freshman Maya Ingels' (Saint Paul, Minn./Saint Paul Central) game-winner as the Huskies overcame a 2-1 halftime deficit. Morin finished with two goals and two assists in the game.

Today's game marks the fourth in the series between the Huskies and the Bengals. USM leads the series 3-1.  Southern Maine won the 2025 contest 5-0 at home. Prior to the 2024 contest (an 8-0 win for USM), the Huskies last faced UMFK in 2011 falling 3-0.
 
How It Happened:
  • Southern Maine took an early lead as sophomore Marie Benoit (Hallowell, Maine/Hall-Dale) notched her second goal of the season, scoring in the sixth minute on a ball in from Morin.  Benoit finished to the near side with a powerful shot.
  • The lead was short-lived however as a ball over the top allowed Madi Martin to run onto the ball, and drive towards net in the seventh minute for her first of two goals in the game. 
  • After a direct kick was awarded to the Bengals in the 28th minute, Shaniah Johnson was able to make it a 2-1 lead in favor of UMFK has she hit a well-placed ball to the far post.  The Bengals carried its lead into the second half.
  • Morin scored the first of her two goals in the game in the 55th minute with an outstanding finish in stride on a ball into the box from junior Natalie Flageolle (Broomfield, Colo./Legacy). However, UMFK was able to retake the lead as a misplayed ball in the Huskies' backfield played perfectly onto the feet of Martin for her second goal of the game and sixth of the season in the 67th minute.
  • Down 3-2, Morin found the equalizer for her team-leading seventh goal of the season on an assist from junior Kadin Davoren (Yarmouth, Maine) in the 74th minute.  Davoren's assist is her team-leading fourth.
  • Ingles earned the game-winner for the Huskies in the 79th minute completing the assist from Morin for her second goal of her collegiate career.

Inside the Stats
  • Southern Maine outshot the Bengals 21-8, but UMFK keeper Dreanna Thaw was able to make 11 saves in the game.
  • Morin's seven goals this season give her 11 in her career.  She has 11 goals and eight assists in 25 career games for 30 points.
