Southern Maine Wins Seventh Straight, Downs Clark 21-12

GORHAM, Maine   – Junior Peter Keblinsky (Ellsworth, Maine) went 3-for-6 at the plate with a pair of doubles and five RBI to lead a 20-hit performances from the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a 21-12 win over the Clark University Couguars in a non-conference baseball game Thursday afternoon at Ed Flaherty Field.

The 21 runs marks the fourth time this season that Huskies have scored 20 or more runs in a game.  The Huskies' 20 hits against Clark also mark the third time this season that Southern Maine has had at least 20 hits in the game.  Of the Huskies' 20 hits, nine were for extra bases, including Keblinsky's two doubles and a pair of triples from senior Kyle Douin (Augusta, Maine/Cony).  All nine of the Huskies' hitters had at least one hit in the game.

How It Happened:
  • Clark led early scoring twice in the top of the first as Bennett Hewett homered to start the game.  Hewett finished the game 5-for-5 at the plate as the Cougars connected on 16 hits in the game.
  • After a quick bottom of the first from the Huskies' hitters, Clark doubled its lead to 4-0 in the top of the second as Dom Mariani knocked a two-run double to left field.
  • Southern Maine got on the board in the home half of the second scoring twice on three hits. Sophomore Caleb Vacchiano (Cornish, Maine/Sacopee Valley) led off the inning with a double. Junior Carter Higgins (Truro, Nova Scotia) reached on the first of seven Clark errors. With runners on the corners, Higgins stole second and when the throw was errant, Vacchiano crossed home for a 4-1 game.  Freshman Kaiden Morin (Brewer, Maine) made it 4-2 with a two-out RBI double to left to score Higgins.
  • Senior Jack Bruno (Upton, Mass.), the eventual game-winner, entered the game in relief in the third and kept Clark off the scoreboard. Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the third, Douin led off the inning with the first of his two triples in the game and then scored on an RBI ground out from Keblinsky for a 4-3 game.
  • Bruno remained solid in the fourth, and Southern Maine surged ahead with three runs in the inning for a 6-4 lead.  Morin had an RBI ground out in the inning, while Douin smacked an RBI double to the gap in right, and Keblinsky singled to left field for an RBI.
  • With both teams scoreless in the fifth, Clark threatened for a big inning in the top of the sixth.  Loading the bases on a walk and back-to-back singles from Hewett and Mariani, Michael Soares drew a walk for an RBI and a 6-5 game.  With the bases still loaded and no one out, Husky freshman Kason Lewis (South Portland, Maine) entered the game for sophomore Jackson Emery (Vernon, Vt./Brattleboro Union).  Lewis got the Huskies first out of the inning with a strikeout, and then was picked up by his defense as Keblinsky, Vacchiano and Douin combined for an inning-ending double-play to preserve the lead.
  • With its lead trimmed to one run, 6-5, Southern Maine exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the sixth to lead 15-5.  The Huskies had seven hits in the outburst, and took advantage of two walks, two hit-by-pitch and a Clark fielding error.  Keblinsky had a two-run double to start the scoring, while Vacchiano drove in the third run of the inning with a single to left.  Higgins added a two-run double of his own, and junior Mike Anquillare (North Haven, Conn.) singled through the left side for an RBI for a 12-5 lead. After a stolen base moved Anquillare to third, Morin also singled through the left side for an RBI before junior Evan Baschnagel (Garden City, NY/Chaminade) made it a 15-5 game with a two-run double to the gap in right.
  • Clark answered right back however in the top of the seventh scoring six runs on five hits to keep itself in the game, 15-11. Alfonso Jalil, and Hewitt each had RBI singles to highlight the Cougar surge.
  • Clark took back another run in the top of the eighth to trail by three runs 15-12 as Soares singled up the middle for an RBI, but Southern Maine shut the door on the game scoring six runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning.  Keblinsky had his second double of the game for an RBI, while Vacchianno and Higgins each had RBI singles.  The Huskies scored their final three runs unearned as a long-fly ball to right was dropped for the potential third out, scoring a run.  Junior Quinn Dillon (Gorham, Maine) drove in USM's final run of the game with an RBI single through the right side for a 21-12 lead.
  • IN the ninth, Southern Maine put rookie Cole Arundale (Sharon, Mass.) on the mound for his collegiate debut.  Arundale worked the inning well getting the final out with a strikeout.
