Fast Start Leads Southern Maine to 14-5 Win over Anna Maria

GORHAM, Maine – Senior Rhys Bridges (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) had a hat trick and was one of five members of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's lacrosse team to record three points in the Huskies' 14-5 win over Anna Maria College on Wednesday evening at Hannaford Field. Sophomore Finn McCarthy (Durham, Maine/Freeport) scored twice and had an assist, while, junior Kaden Manning (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) and sophomore Zach Smith (Waterbury, Vt./Harwood Union) each had a goal and two assists.
 
Freshman Tim Caouette (South Portland, Maine) scored the first two goals of his career. Freshman Alden Densmore (Limerick, Maine/Massabesic) and junior Jack Hardiman (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) also scored their first career goals in the win. Junior Owen Gaulrapp (Windham, Maine), junior Adam Coley (Valencia, Cail./Cheshire) and senior James Kastrinakis (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) each recorded two points on a goal and an assist.
 
Junior Nick Shevchenko (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) won 10 faceoffs and recorded a team-leading nine ground balls. Coley, Caouette and junior Jake Spalinger (Windham, N.H.) each had our ground balls.
 
Junior goalie Brycen Wolfahrt (Biddeford, Maine) made five saves in the first half while allowing two goals to earn his second win of the season. Sophomore Nick Pastusak (Pittsville, Md./Parkside) and freshman Dax Morin (Belchertown, Mass.) each played a quarter in net as well.

Series History:
The Huskies are now 2-0 all-time against the AMCATS. Southern Maine won the first game between the two programs by a score of 17-12 on February 21, 2024 in Gorham.
 
The Goaltenders:

How It Happened:
  • Southern Maine scrod three times in the first three minutes of the contest with Bridges, Coley and Smith finding the back of the net. Gaulrapp assisted on the goal by Bridges. Coley's goal came after a faceoff win by Shevchenko who fed him the pass for the score. McCarthy had the assist on Smith's score.
  • Kastrinakis then set up Hardiman's first career goal and Coley assisted on another goal by Bridges to give the Huskies a 5-0 lead after the first quarter.
  • Caouette extended the lead to 6-0 with 9:41 left in the second before back-to-back goals by Bridges and Gaulrapp pushed the lead to 8-0. The AMCATS finally broke through with a goal by Jacob Martin with 5:05 left in the half. Manning then added a goal for the Huskies before Martin set up Nicholas Hussa for a second Anna Maria goal with 1:37 left in the half.
  • Each side scored once in the third quarter. The combo of Hussa and Martin once again found the net for the AMCATS while a final minute goal by Manning made the Huskies' lead 10-3 entering the fourth.
  • The Huskies outscored the AMCATS 4-2 over the final 15 minutes with goals by Kastrinakis, McCarthy, Caouette and Densmore. Manning assisted on the goals by Kastrinakis and Densmore, while sophomore Rodrigo Rego-Araujo (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) had the assist on McCarthy's goal.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Led by Shevchenko, the Huskies won 17-of-23 faceoffs. Freshman Charles Kennedy (Windham, Maine) also was a key contributor with seven wins in nine attempts plus three ground balls.
  • Defensively, the Huskies caused 17 turnovers led by three each from Spalinger and junior Colby Chavarie (Belgrade, Maine/ Messalonskee). Senior Ryan Cummings (Bangor, Maine/John Bapst) and junior Cameron Hawks (San Diego, Cali./Argyle) also had good games defensively.
  • Southern Maine led 29-18 in shots on goal and 46-33 in total shots.

The next game for Southern Maine will be a road game at Plymouth State University on Tuesday, April 7 at 4:00.
