O’Driscoll’s Goal Lifts Southern Maine Past Curry 8-7

GORHAM, Maine – Junior Pat O'Driscoll (Biddeford, Maine) scored with just under seven minutes left to break a 7-7 tie and give the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's lacrosse team an 8-7 non-conference win over the Curry College Colonels on Sunday afternoon. O'Driscoll finished the game with four points on two goals and two assists. The Huskies also had a hat trick from junior Owen Gaulrapp (Windham, Maine), two goals and an assist from junior Adam Coley (Valencia, Cail./Cheshire) and a goal and an assist from sophomore Zach Smith (Waterbury, Vt./Harwood Union).

How It Happened:
  • Gaulrapp gave the Huskies an early 2-0 lead with back-to-back goals before two goals in just over a minute by Cole tied the game for the Colonels.
  • Curry took their first lead of the game 32 seconds into the second quarter on a Kai Johnson goal. The Huskies then tied the score with a goal by Smith from senior Rhys Bridges (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee). Cole assisted on a goal by Mawhinney to put Curry back ahead only for the Huskies to reclaim the lead at 5-4 thanks to goals by Coley and Gaulrapp. A Kyle Bouley goal evened the score at 5-5 with 7:55 left in the half before Coley put the Huskies back on top 45 seconds later with his second goal of the game.
  • After the teams combined for seven goals in the second quarter the offense slowed for both sides with Curry's Jed Cappuccino recording the only goal of the third quarter to tie the game at 6-6.
  • O'Driscoll scored an up goal with 10:26 left to put the Huskies ahead 7-6. However, Curry answered with a man-up goal of their own from Cole with 7:43 to go. With each team having a player in the box, Coley found a streaking O'Driscoll with room to run to set up the game-winning goal. A pair of pushing penalties in the final minute of play helped the Huskies retain possession and secure the win.
