Huskies Fall to Mariners 20-4 on the Road

CASTINE, Maine – Trey Marcil recorded nine points on three goals and six assists for the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners on Monday evening in a 20-4 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's lacrosse team. Ryan Parent scored a game-high five goals and added two assists to finish with seven points. Tobey Lappin added four goals and two assists for the Mariners as well.
 
Junior Kaden Manning (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) scored twice for the Huskies for his second multiple-goal game of the season. Junior Owen Gaulrapp (Windham, Maine) and sophomore Zach Smith (Waterbury, Vt./Harwood Union) had goals as well. Gaulrapp led the Huskies in ground ball with six, a new career high.
 
Ben Kieu earned the win for the Mariners with four saves in the first half. Junior Brycen Wolfahrt (Biddeford, Maine) was saddled with the loss.

The Huskies lead the all-time series 17-4, despite Maine Maritime winning the past four meetings.

How It Happened:
  • Lappin, Marcil and each scored twice in the first quarter as the Mariners got out to a 9-1 lead. Manning scored Southern Maine's goal with 1:07 left when he brought the ball in on the restart, shook his defender and ripped a shot into the back for the net.
  • The Mariners had an up goal from Lappin to start the second quarter the extend their lead to 10-1. Following a wide shot by sophomore Finn McCarthy (Durham, Maine/Freeport), Gaulrapp brought the ball back in play in play and worked around the defense to fire an off-balance shot that beat the keeper low for his seventh goal of the season with 8:55 left in the half. However, the Mariners added three goals in final six minutes of the half to enter halftime with a 13-2 lead.
  • After six more Maine Maritime goals, Manning scored his second goal of the game with three seconds left in the third quarter.
  • Each team scored once in the fourth quarter with Ryker Spear scoring for the Mariners and Smith accounting for the Southern Maine goal with 30 seconds left in the game.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The Mariners had a 34-15 lead in shots on goal and led 60-31 in total shots.
  • Southern Maine went 16-for-23 on clears. The Mariners were 16-for-24.
  • The ground balls were 65-34 in favor of Maine Maritime. Bryce Crowell had a game-leading 16 ground balls thank to going 19-for-23 in faceoffs.
  • Junior Jake Spalinger (Windham, Maine) matched his career-high in ground balls with four to place second on the team.
  • Junior Nick Shevchenko (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) went 5-for-17 in faceoffs with three ground balls.
  • Freshman Alden Densmore (Limerick, Maine/Massabesic) recorded three ground balls in his collegiate debut.
 
Up Next:
The Huskies will play their first Little East Conference game of the season on Saturday at home against Vermont State University Castleton. The game is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
