Southern Maine Falls to No. 5 Norwich on 4-2 Senior Day

GORHAM, Maine – The University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's ice hockey team was defeated 4-2 by the No. 5 Norwich University Cadets on Saturday. Norwich's Olivia Boyer scored twice while Geena Cookinham assisted on three goals. The Huskies had goals from junior Shannon Murphy (Pembroke, Mass./Brewster Academy) and senior Saige MacLeod (Dryden, Ontario).
 
Freshman Megan Gawley (Calgary, Alberta) made 37 saves for the Huskies. Madison Brunet had 11 saves for Norwich.
 
Southern Maine honors seniors Madison Chagnon (St. Albans, Vt./Rice Memorial), Sydnee Chaisson (Stratford, Prince Edward Island/Mount Academy), Audrey Donahue (Timberlea, Nova Scotia/Kimball Union Academy), Jillian Jackson (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Ontario Hockey Academy), Saige MacLeod (Dryden, Ontario), Olivia Stewart (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) and Caroline Thompson (Crapaud, Prince Edward Island/Mount Academy).

How It Happened:
  • The Huskies scored quickly with a breakaway goal by Murphy on their first shot just 2:16 into the game. Donahue and junior Ellie Eigner (Bowling Green, Ohio/ South Lyon East) recorded the assists. Madison Anderson tied the game for Norwich with just under 10 minutes left in the period. Norwich killed three penalties in the period.
  • Norwich finally converted on a power play with a goal by Dani Ammons with 5:48 left to go. The Huskies tied the game with a shorthanded goal by MacLeod after she forced a turnover with 1:05 left in the period.
  • Boyer scored both Norwich goals in the third period. The first came seconds after a Southern Maine penalty expired in the opening minute of the period then added a second goal with 14:40 left on the clock.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The Cadets had a 41-13 lead in shots on goal.
  • The two teams combined for 12 penalties with Norwich committing six and the Huskies committing five.
  • Donahue blocked three shots.

Southern Maine will play a two-game road series at Plymouth State next Friday and Saturday.
