RUTLAND, Vt. – Cam Reid had a hat trick, and David Coyle had a goal and two assists for the Vermont State University Castleton Spartans on Saturday evening in an 8-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's ice hockey team. Sophomore Owen Arend (Palmetto, Fla./Kents Hill School) scored the lone goal for the Huskies with an assist from senior Cole Brennan (Sussex, N.J./ Pomfret School).
 
Freshman goalie Ean Badgett (Howell, Mich.) took the loss while making 10 saves in 22 plus minutes of action.

Series History:
Castleton and Southern Maine have now played 37 times with the Spartans leading the series 19-16-2. The Huskies took the first meeting this season, 6-4, in Gorham on November 14.

How It Happened:

• Castleton had a goal from Credick Theodore just 28 seconds into the game. The hosts added a second goal with just over five minutes left in the period when Luke Chakrabarti found the back of the net.
• The Spartans scored four times in the second period to put the game out of reach. Emmett McHardy scored the first 2:51 into the period. Morin then replaced Badgett in goal. Reid then scored a minute later to make the lead 4-0.
• Arend put Castleton's shutout attempt to an end with his fifth goal of the year 11:33 into the second with Brennan logging with 11th helper of the season. Castleton then closed out the period with goals from Josef Vyvial and Reid to take a 6-1 lead.
• Reid and Coyle added goals for Castleton in the final period.

 
Inside The Stats:

• Castleton had a 40-31 lead in shots on goal and led 36-23 in faceoffs.
• The Spartans also led 15-7 in blocked shots.
• Southern Maine went 0-for-2 on the power play while Castleton was 0-for-1.
