MCLA Comes from Behind to Defeat Southern Maine 9-8

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Anthony Andolina scored six goals, including three in the fourth quarter, for the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in a 9-8 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's lacrosse contest. Junior Adam Coley (Valencia, Cail./Cheshire) led the Huskies with four points on a hat trick and an assist.
 
Junior Lucas Rego (Dracut, Mass./Lowell Catholic) also scored twice for the Huskies. Sophomore Finn McCarthy (Durham, Maine/Freeport), senior Rhys Bridges (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) and junior Owen Gaulrapp (Windham, Maine) each recorded a goal and an assist. Sophomore Zach Smith (Waterbury, Vt./Harwood Union) assisted on two goals.
 
Senior Addison Dietz (Waterbury Center, Vt./ Harwood Union) made three saves for the Huskies.

Series History:
Today's game was the first-ever meeting between Southern Maine and MCLA.
 
The Goaltenders:
Southern Maine: Addison Dietz (0-1), 60:00, nine goals allowed, three saves
MCLA: Quentan Polkowski (1-0), 60:00, eight goals allowed, 16 saves
 
How It Happened:
  • The Huskies started the game with a 3-0 run with goals from Bridges, Coley and Gaulrapp. Coley also assisted on the goal by Bridges. The Trailblazers ended the period with back-to-back goals from Neal Brierley and Andolina to make it 3-2 heading into the second quarter.
  • Brierley tied the game about five minutes into the second quarter before an up goal by Coley gave the Huskies the lead once again. However, MCLA scored twice to take the lead right back before Rego tied the game at 5-5 with 2:11 left in the half.
  • An up goal by Andolina made the score 6-5 for MCLA, but McCarthy then tied the game less than 90 seconds later with Smith assisting. Another up goal by Coley from Gaulrapp gave the Huskies a 7-6 lead with 2:37 left in the third.
  • Rego extended the lead to 8-6 with Bridges assisting on his goal with 8:55 left. Andolina then scored three times in the final seven minutes to lead the Trailblazers to a come-from-behind win. His game-winning goal came with 50 seconds left on the clock.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The Huskies had the bulk of the shots at 39-21 and doubled MCLA's shots on goal at 24-12
  • Southern Maine led 38-26 in ground balls and 15-6 in faceoffs.
  • Smith and freshman Charles Kennedy (Windham, Maine) tied for the most ground balls on the team with five each.
  • Sophomore Noah Johnson (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) led the Huskies in caused turnovers with three.
