Southern Maine Drops Season-Opener to Husson 12-8

BANGOR, Maine – The University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's lacrosse team was defeated 12-8 on Thursday afternoon by the Husson University Eagles in their first game of the season. Junior Owen Gaulrapp (Windham, Maine) led the Huskies with three points from two goals and an assist. Sophomore Finn McCarthy (Durham, Maine/Freeport), junior Kaden Manning (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) and senior Rhys Bridges (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) each scored twice for the Huskies.
 
Husson was led by Taylor Schwalje with five points on a goal and four assists. Dominic Hollenkamp and Alek Duprey each had three goals and an assist. Odin Burk earned the win for the Eagles with 13 saves. Junior Brycen Wolfahrt (Biddeford, Maine) made six saves and was charged with the loss for the Huskies.

Series History:
The Huskies hold an 11-3 lead in the all-time series. Husson won last season's meeting 4-3 in overtime on February 26, 2025 in Gorham.

Husson: Odin Burk (1-0), 60:00, eight goals allowed, 13 save
Southern Maine: Brycen Wolfahrt (0-1), 30:00, seven goals allowed, six saves

How It Happened:
  • Husson opened the game on a 3-0 run with goals from Gabe Robinson, Duprey and Hollenkamp. Schwalje assisted on the second and third goals.
  • Bridges scored the first goal of the season for the Huskies with 2:27 left on a feed by sophomore Zach Smith (Waterbury, Vt./Harwood Union). Hollenkamp then added a second goal with just over a minute left in the quarter to give Husson a 4-1 lead.
  • Hollenkamp, Duprey and Schwalje each had a goal and an assist as Husson scored three more times in the second to take a 7-1 lead into halftime.
  • The Huskies outscored the Eagles 5-2 in the third quarter to cut the lead to 9-6. Manning scored the first goal for the Huskies in the half with junior Jake Spalinger (Windham, Maine) picking up his first career assist. Following a Husson goal by Kiernan Field, McCarthy and Gaulrapp scored back-to-back goals before Husson quickly added another score. Southern Maine then closed out the quarter with goals by Manning and Bridges. Junior Pat O'Driscoll (Biddeford, Maine) assisted on Manning's second goal.
  • Husson extended their lead to 11-6 with goals by Robinson and Owen Giorgio before the Huskies countered with back-to-back goals of their own from Gaulrapp and McCarthy. Field scored the final goal of the game with the Eagles on the up for the 12-8 final.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The teams were even in shots on goal at 21-21 despite the Huskies leading 42-28 in total shots.
  • Husson led 52-32 in ground balls.
  • Southern Maine committed four penalties, two of which led to man-up goals.
  • Husson went 21-for-30 on clears. The Huskies were 18-for-30.
  • Junior Nick Shevchenko (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) went 11-for-16 on faceoffs with a team-high seven ground balls.
  • Spalinger and senior Herb Bryant (Portland, Maine) each caused three turnovers. Bryant also recorded four ground balls to tie with O'Driscoll for second on the team.
