Salve Regina Outlasts Southern Maine 5-4

GORHAM, Maine – Caroline Batchelder's hat trick helped lead the Salve Regina University Seahawks to a 5-4 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's ice hockey team on Saturday afternoon in Gorham's USM Ice Arena. Graduate student Madison Chagnon (St. Albans, Vt./Rice Memorial) scored twice for the Huskies and also tallied an assist. She has now scored in each of the last four games.

Fifth-year senior Jillian Jackson (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Ontario Hockey Academy) and sophomore Josie Arrants (Rock Springs, Wy./Lovell Academy) also had goals for the Huskies. Arrants' goal was the first of her career. Freshman Freshman Gracelyn Koch (Maple Grove, New Brunswick) recorded a pair of assists.
 
Freshman goalie Brooklyn Goodman (Saco, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) made her Southern Maine debut after replacing Megan Gawley (Calgary, Alberta) for the final two periods. Goodman finished with 12 saves.

Series History:
The Huskies and Seahawks have now played 34 times with Southern Maine holding a 17-14-3 lead in the series. The Seahawks took all three meetings last season with wins in both regular season games and in a win in the New England Hockey Conference playoffs.

How It Happened:
  • Batchelder 12:39 into the first period to give the Seahawks a 1-0 lead before the Huskies countered with a Chagnon goal 1:05 later with Koch assisting. Batchelder then scored again, this time while the Seahawks were shorthanded, with just under three minutes to go. The Huskies answered in the final 90 seconds of the period with a power play goal by Jackson off the rebound of a shot by freshman Charlotte Hughes (Mississauga, Ontario).
  • Salve Regina scored twice in the span of 36 seconds midway through the second period. Batchelder scored the first goal to complete her hat trick and Samantha McKenzie added another Salve Regina goal. The Huskies closed out the period strong once again as Arrants blasted home her first career goal with 15 seconds left in the period on the power play. Senior Sydnee Chaisson (Stratford, Prince Edward Island/Mount Academy) and sophomore Greta Grant (Brownfield, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) had the assists.
  • Each side scored one more time in the third period. Ashtyn Bringardner extended Salve Regina's lead to 5-3 2:33 into the period before Chagnon scored her second goal of the game with Koch and senior Audrey Donahue (Timberlea, Nova Scotia/Kimball Union Academy) assisting.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Southern Maine had a 34-25 advantage in shots on goal, while Salve Regina led 28-17 in faceoff wins.
  • Each team blocked 10 shots.
