Southern Maine Downs Plymouth State 75-51 for 13th Consecutive Win


PLYMOUTH, NH  –  Sophomore Lucy Wiles (Glenburn, Maine/Hampden Academy) scored a game-high 22 points to lead three players in double-figures as the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's basketball team extended its win-streak to 13 games defeating the Plymouth State University Panthers 75-51 in a Little East Conference women's basketball match up Wednesday night at Foley Gym.
 
Shooting 4-for-5 from three, and 6-for-14 overall, wiles added three assists and three steals for the Huskies.  Senior Jaycie Christopher (Skowhegan, Maine) added 19 points, 12 rebounds and five assists, while senior Avah Ingalls (Hampstead, NH/Pinkerton Academy) added 10 points, three rebounds and three assists.  Sophomore Dakota Shipley (Bath, Maine/Brunswick) had eight points, 12 rebounds, two blocks and two assists, while senior Julia Kratzer (Gorham, Maine) had a career-best nine points off of the bench.
 
Ashley Stephens led PSU with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Stephens was the only Panther in double-digit scoring. Raegan Peck had nine points, while Hailey Malozzi added eight points, 6 rebounds.

Today's game marked the 104th meeting between the Plymouth State University Panthers and the University of Southern Maine Huskies. Southern Maine leads the overall series 96-8 and has won the last 16 consectively over the Panthers.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Ahead by just two points, 13-11, after a PSU bucket from Peck at the 4:47 mark, Southern Maine closed out the first quarter on a 9-0 run to surge ahead of the Panthers 22-11.  The Huskies went 4-for-4 from the field in the run, and received scoring contributions from four players, including a three from Kratzer, and a layup from Christopher of USM's final possession.
  • Both teams were sluggish offensively in the second quarter.  Christopher had USM ahead 25-13 with a layup at the 7:49 mark, but the Panthers' Peck and Macy Swormstedt rattled off a quick 5-0 spurt on a three and a layup respectively to trail 25-18 at the 6:47 mark. Ingalls and graduate student Liz Cote (Conway, NH/Kennett) responded with back-to-back threes pushing USM's lead to 31-18 over the next minute of action. The Huskies stayed in front of the Panthers and led by 16, 40-24, on one of two free throws from Christopher before PSU closed the gap to 11 points heading into the halftime break with a 5-0 run, including a buzzer-beating three from Malozzi for a 40-29 game.
  • After a minute expired in the third, PSU's Genna Bolduc converted a layup for the first points of the frame bringing the Panthers to within nine, 40-31, but Southern Maine ran off a decisive 11-0 run over the next 2:24 of action to balloon its lead to 20, 51-31, with 5:44 to play. The Huskies were a perfect 4-for-4 in the run including triples from Wiles and Ingalls. After the 11-0 Husky spurt, both teams traded points and USM led 59-39 headed into the fourth.
  • Stephens scored twice for the Panthers making it a 59-43 game at 8:13, but the Huskies slammed the door on PSU with a 12-4 run over the next 5:13 of action to lead 71-47 with 2:50 to play. Kratzer hit back-to-back threes in the run, while Wiles had five points. From there USM held for the 75-51 final.
 
Inside The Statistics:
  • After shooting 60.0 percent in the first quarter (9-for-15), Southern Maine cooled offensively in the second (31.3 percent) and third (27.8 percent) and finish the fourth quarter shooting 44.4 percent.  The Huskies shot below their season average for the game at 39.7 percent (23-for-58) but were 42.4 percent (14-for-33) from three-point range.
  • Southern Maine scored 15 of its 75 points off of Plymouth State turnovers.  The Panthers committed 17 turnovers in the contest. 
  • Christopher's double-double is her seventh of the season. She leads the Little East Conference and is in the top 65 of NCAA Division III women's basketball.

The Huskies are on the road trip Saturday, January 24 (1:00 pm) at WestConn.  Southern Maine returns home on Wednesday, January 28 (5:00 pm) against UMass Boston, and then hosts Keene State College on Saturday, January 31 (1:00 pm) in the second annual NAMI Maine/Wade Millett Memorial Foundation Games.
