Christopher, Wiles and Shipley in Double Figures


DANBURY, Conn.   –  Senior Jaycie Christopher (Skowhegan, Maine) had a double-double with 25 points and 13 rebounds to lead three players in double-figures as the University of Southern Maine Huskies rolled to an 82-54 win over the WestConn Wolves in Little East Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena.
 
Christopher was 5-for-6 from the field (1-for-1 from three) and 14-for-16 from the free throw line for her game-high scoring total.  She added three assists and three steals to her 13 rebounds.  Sophomore Lucy Wiles (Glenburn, Maine/Hampden Academy) added 19 points on 6-for-12 shooting (2-for-5 from three) and a 6-for-6 mark from the free throw line. Wiles led USM defensively with five steals, and had two assists, and two rebounds.  Sophomore Dakota Shipley (Bath, Maine/Brunswick) added 14 points on 6-for-10 shooting. 
 
Leana Heitmann and Fatmata Barrie each had seven points for the Wolves.  Heitmann added 10 rebounds, two assists and a steal.  Gianna Castellano, Francesca Foster and Julyssa Patterson each had six points.  Foster had six boards.

Today's game marked the 74th meeting between the WestConn Wolves and the University of Southern Maine Huskies. Southern Maine leads the overall series 55-19 and has won 14 of the last 17 meetings, including the last seven consecutively. Today's win gives Southern Maine the 2025-2026 season sweep of the Wolves.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After giving up the first basket of the game, Southern Maine rattled off a 12-0 run, powered by six points from Wiles and four from Shipley, to lead the rest of the way.  Shooting 61.5 percent from the field in the opening quarter, Southern Maine led the Wolves 27-14 as Wiles scored 16 of her 19 in the frame.
  • Both teams cooled offensively in the second quarter but the Huskies outscored WestConn 18-11 taking a 45-25 lead into the halftime break. Christopher had eight of her game-high 25 points in the second quarter, while Shipley added five.
  • WestConn's Dingle scored the first bucket of the second half, but Southern Maine responded with a 10-0 run over the next 2:48 of action ballooning its lead to 55-27 with 6:53 left in the third quarter.  Shipley had five in the run, while Christopher added four. Finley Burke ended the scoring drought for the Wolves with a layup, but the Huskies outscored WestConn 14-7 to close out the quarter up 69-36 including a jumper from Morelli with one second remaining to head into the fourth.
  • WestConn again started the scoring in the fourth as Francesca Foster connected on a layup at the 8:32 mark for a 69-38 game. However, Morelli and freshman Lexi Morin (Brunswick, Maine) scored four points each as part of a 12-7 spurt to give USM its largest lead of the game, 36 points, 81-45, with 4:47 in the game.  From there, the Huskies were content to ride out the game for the 82-54 final.
 
Inside The Statistics:
  • Southern Maine finished the game shooting 43.3 percent (26-for-60) from the field and shot 78.1 percent from the free throw line (25-for-32).  WestConn shot 35 percent (21-for-60) from the field and made just 10-of-26 (38.5 percent) from the free throw line.
  • Christopher's double-double is her eighth of the season. She leads the Little East Conference in double-doubles.
  • Morelli's eight points are a career-high for the freshman forward. She is averaging 3.4 points and 1.4 rebounds per game in just over eight minutes of action.  She is shooting 45.7 percent from the field.

Southern Maine returns home on Wednesday, January 28 (5:00 pm) against UMass Boston, and then hosts Keene State College on Saturday, January 31 (1:00 pm) in the second annual NAMI Maine/Wade Millett Memorial Foundation Games.
