Jackson Scores Twice as Huskies Beat Beacons 5-3; Chagnon Reaches 50 Career Goals

BOSTON – Fifth-year senior Jillian Jackson (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Ontario Hockey Academy) scored two goals, including the game-winner in the third period, for University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's ice hockey team on Saturday afternoon in a 5-3 win over the UMass Boston Beacons. Junior Shannon Murphy (Pembroke, Mass./Brewster Academy) also had multiple points with a pair of assists. Two other Huskies reached major milestones a graduate student Madison Chagnon (St. Albans, Vt./Rice Memorial) scored her 50th career goal and freshman goalie Megan Gawley (Calgary, Alberta) earned the first win of her career.
 
Chagnon is now the second player in program history to reach 50 career goals and tied the program record for shorthanded goals in a career with her fifth such score. Gawley came into the game midway through the second period and stopped 18 of the 19 shots that she faced to help the Huskies to the win.
 
The Huskies also had goals from freshman Gracelyn Koch (Maple Grove, New Brunswick) and senior Saige MacLeod (Dryden, Ontario).

Series History:
The Beacons lead the series 24-17-4 but the season series was split evenly 1-1-1.

UMass Boston: Veronika Hadamovsky (1-3-1): 59:20, five goals allowed, 11 saves
Southern Maine: Maggie Jones: 29:50, two goals allowed, 11 saves
Southern Maine: Megan Gawley: (1-1-0), 29:12, one goal allowed, 18 saves
 
How It Happened:
  • Jackson scored 52 seconds into the game with Murphy and senior Olivia Stewart (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) assisting. The goal was quickly answered by Lily Hayes and the Beacons 2:18 into the period to tie the score. Each team added one for goal in the period as Mia Boyd scored on the power play for the Beacons with 5:45 to go before Koch tied the game with a shorthanded tally in the final minute of the period. Senior Audrey Donahue (Timberlea, Nova Scotia/Kimball Union Academy) assisted on Koch's goal.
  • The Huskies retook the lead on another shorthanded goal, this time by Chagnon, with 4:04 left in the second period. A pass from Donahue found Chagnon all the way at the other end of the ice and the graduate student beat Hadamovsky for the score.
  • The Beacons tied the game at 3-3 6:31 into the third period when Gianna Skrelja found the back of the net. Southern Maine reclaimed the lead on Jackson's second goal of the afternoon after the puck bounced her way with an open net in front of her after a shot by Murphy hit the post.
  • MacLeod added an empty net goal in the final seconds for the 5-3 final.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • UMass Boston had a 33-16 lead in shots on goal while the Huskies put 16 shots on frame.
  • The Beacons led 26-21 in faceoff wins.
  • Southern Maine went 6-for-7 on the penalty kill and 0-for-2 on the power play.
  • Changon is the second player in program history to score 50 career goals. She trails only Holly Manning, who scored 81 from 1999-2003.
  • Donahue blocked a team-leading three shots.
  • Jackso's game-winner is her third of the season. She leads the team in both goals with seven and points with nine.
 
Up Next:
The Huskies will play a two-game road series at Vermont State University Castleton next weekend with the first game starting at 6:00 pm on Friday, January 23.
