RUTLAND, Vt. – Freshman Megan Gawley (Calgary, Alberta) made 26 saves to pick up the first shutout of her career and graduate student Madison Chagnon (St. Albans, Vt./Rice Memorial) scored a pair of goals as earned the University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's ice hockey team defeated the Vermont State University Castleton Spartans 5-0 on Friday evening. Chagnon was one of four Huskies with multiple points as junior Ellie Eigner (Bowling Green, Ohio/ South Lyon East) logged a goal and an assist, and freshman Charlotte Hughes (Mississauga, Ontario) and sophomore Joely Power (Clarenville, Newfoundland/Mount Academy) each had two assists.
 
Fifth-year senior Jillian Jackson (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Ontario Hockey Academy) also scored a goal to extend her scoring streak to four games. The Huskies also had a goal from freshman Anna Elizarkov (Boothbay Harbor, Maine/Lovell Academy).

Series History:
The Spartans hold a 22-16-5 lead in the all-time series. Southern Maine won the first meeting between the two teams earlier this season on November 14 in overtime 2-1.

How It Happened:

• After a scoreless first period, Chagnon scored her first goal 8:18 into the second period with Hughes and sophomore Makenzie Woodford (Cornwall, Prince Edward Island/Mount Academy) assisting. Jackson added a second Husky goal 13:46 into the period from junior Shannon Murphy (Pembroke, Mass./Brewster Academy) and senior Olivia Stewart (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy).
• Elizarkov scored just over a minute into the third period to extend the lead to 3-0 with Power and Eigner providing the assists. The Huskies then added two goals in the final three minutes with Chagnon scoring an empty netter and Eigner sneaking the puck past the Castleton goalie in the final minute.  

 
Inside The Stats:

• Chagnon now has extended her program record for game-winners to 18.
• VTSU Castleton led 26-24 in shots on goal and 30-22 in faceoff wins.
• Southern Maine went 0-for-2 on the power play while the Spartans were 0-for-4.
• Senior Audrey Donahue (Timberlea, Nova Scotia/Kimball Union Academy) played in her 100^th career NCAA game between Nazareth University (58) and Southern Maine (42). It was also Jackson's 100th career game between Norwich (74) and Southern Maine (26).
• Jackson and Chagnon each reached 10 points on the season and are tied for the most on the team.
