Huskies Earn 3-1 Road Win at UMass Dartmouth

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. – Freshman Ben Aucoin (Moncton, New Brunswick), junior Kayde Kinaschuk (Calgary, Alberta) and junior Owen Drummey (Falmouth, Maine) each notched goals for the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's ice hockey team on Saturday evening in a 3-1 win over UMass Dartmouth at Hetland Arena in New Bedford, Mass. Nine Huskies in total logged points in the win as senior John Hagan (Canton, Mass./Tilton School), freshman Nick Vinson (Brewer, Maine), sophomore Hunter Svicki (Toronto, Ontario), sophomore Gavin Simopoulos (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), senior Kadin Ilott (Kenora, Ontario) and junior Ethan MacDuff (Lloydminster, Alberta) each had an assist.
 
Hagan now has points in each of the last five games with two goals and four assists over that stretch. Drummey's goal is his first of the season.
 
Freshman goalie Loic Morin (Drummondville, Quebec) picked up his seventh win of the season with a 43-save performance.

Series History:
Today's game was the first between the Huskies and Corsairs since February 27, 2021, when the Corsairs left Gorham with a 4-2 win. UMass Dartmouth leads the series 17-4-1.
 
The Goaltenders:
Southern Maine: Loic Morin (7-6-1): 60:00, one goal allowed, 43 saves
UMass Dartmouth: Marshall McKallip (3-2-0), 56:35, three goals allowed, 24 saves
 
 
How It Happened:
  • The Huskies scored twice in the first period to take an early lead. The first goal was scored by Aucoin, his 14th of the season with 6:34 to go. Hagan and Ilott picked up the assists. The Huskies added a second goal two minutes later as Drummey slipped behind the Corsairs' defense and finished off a pass from Vinson for his first score of the season. Svicki also assisted on the goal.
  • Morin made 16 saves in the second period to keep his shutout bid intact. The Huskies were outshot 16-6 in the period.
  • Kinaschuk ripped a shot into the back of the net for his seventh goal of the year from MacDuff and Simopoulos with 14:13 left in the third. The Corsairs finally broke through with a goal by Cardillo with 9:43 left but Morin made 11 saves through the remainder of the period to give the Huskies the win.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • UMass Dartmouth had a 44-27 lead in shots on goal.
  • The Huskies led 37-34 in faceoff wins. MacDuff had an impressive night in the circle with 13 wins on 16 attempts.
  • The teams combined for 12 penalties but neither team scored on the power play as the Huskies finished 0-for-4 and the Corsairs were 0-for-7.
  • Southern Maine led 18-14 in blocked shots led by three by Ilott.
