GORHAM, Maine   -  Senior Thomas Whelan (Bronx, NY/Fordham Prep) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's basketball has been named the Maine Men's Basketball Coaches and Writers Association (MMBCWA) co-Player of the Week.  Recently named the Little East Conference Player of the Week, Whelan is earning honors from the MMBCWA for the second time this season (Jan. 13, Dec. 15).
 
Whelan averaged 28.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game while shooting a solid 44.4 percent from the field and a perfect 100 percent from the free throw line as the Huskies earned to Little East Conference wins to improve to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in conference.
 
 The Huskies' guard had 30 points in a key conference win over Rhode Island College, 101-86. Scoring 17 of his 30 points in the first half, Whelan helped Southern Maine build a solid 50-38 lead at the half, shooting 5-for-7 from the field.  In a road win at VTSU-Castleton, Whelan continued his strong offensive play, scoring 27 points while going 13-for-13 from the free throw line. Through 14 games, Whelan is averaging 21.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.9 steals per game and is shooting 48.0 percent.
 
Playing in 84 career games, Whelan has 1449 career points and is averaging 17.25 points per game in his career. Whelan has 198 assists (4.77 pg), 114 steals, and is a career 51.58 percent shooter making 538-of-1043 attempts from the field, including an 88-for-239 mark from three (36.82 percent).
 
Southern Maine (8-6 overall, 3-2 Litlte East) returns to Hill Gym on Wednesday, January 14 (4:00 pm) against UMass Dartmouth and then again versus Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, January 17 (3:00 pm). The Huskies are then on the road for its next two contests at Plymouth State on Wednesday, January 21 (7:00 pm) and Saturday, January 24 (3:00 pm at WestConn.
