GORHAM, Maine   -  Senior Thomas Whelan (Bronx, NY/Fordham Prep) and freshman Carter Galley (Owls Head, Maine/Oceanside) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's basketball team have each earned weekly accolades from the Little East Conference.  Whelan is earning Player of the Week honors, while Galley is picking up Rookie of the Week. It is the first time this season that members of the Huskies' men's basketball team have been recognized by the Little East Conference. Both Galley and Whelan have previously been recognized by the Maine Men's Basketball Coaches and Writers Association.
 
In a pair of Little East Conference wins, Whelan averaged 28.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game while shooting a solid 44.4 percent from the field and a perfect 100 percent from the free throw line.  The Huskies' guard had 30 points in a key conference win over Rhode Island College, 101-86. Scoring 17 of his 30 points in the first half, Whelan helped the Huskies to a solid 50-38 lead at the half, shooting 5-for-7 from the field.  In a road win at VTSU-Castleton, Whelan continued his strong offensive play, scoring 27 points while going 13-for-13 from the free throw line. Through 14 games, Whelan is averaging 21.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.9 steals per game and is shooting 48.0 percent.
 
Enjoying a strong first seasn in Gorham, Galley continued his strong play off of the bench for the Huskies in a 2-0 week.  Galley averaged 11.0 point, 5.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game while shooting an efficient 66.7 percent from the floor (10-for-15).  Against Rhode Island Colege, Galley had 12 points, five rebounds and two assists, shooting 6-for-7.  At VTSU-Castleton, Galley had 10 points, six rebounds and four assists on 4-for-8 shooting. Averaging 24.1 minutes per game, Galley has played in each of the Huskies' 14 games and is averaging 11.1 points, 3.1 rebounds. 1.6 assists and 0.8 steals per game while shooting 50.4 percent from the floor. 
Southern Maine (8-6 overall, 3-2 Litlte East) returns to Hill Gym on Wednesday, January 14 (4:00 pm) against UMass Dartmouth and then again versus Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, January 17 (3:00 pm). The Huskies are then on the road for its next two contests at Plymouth State on Wednesday, January 21 (7:00 pm) and Saturday, January 24 (3:00 pm at WestConn.
