GORHAM, Maine   -  Senior Thomas Whelan (Bronx, NY/Fordham Prep) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's basketball team has been named the Maine Men's Basketball Coaches and Writers Association (MMBCWA) co-Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, December 14. 
 
Whelan erupted for a season-high 34 points to lead Southern Maine to an 85-82 win over the University of Maine at Farmington in the Huskies lone contest of the week. The Huskies' senior guard shot 66.7 percent from the field connecting on 14-of-21 shots, adding five rebounds, five assists and a steal. Opening the game with back-to-back layups to get the Huskies' started, Whelan came up clutch in the closing moments at the free throw line to halt a potential UMF comeback bid. 
 
Through 10 games, Whelan is averaging 20.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.9 steals per game while shooting 47.9 percent (81-for-169) from the field, and 37.3 percent (19-for-51) from three-point range.  In his final season with the Huskies, Whelan has 1348 points, 386 rebounds, 187 assists, and 107 steals in 80 career games.  
 
 
Winners of two consecutive games, Southern Maine (5-5) closes out 2025 on the road at Maine Maritime Academy on Tuesday, December 30 (2:00 pm).
