Townsend Hits OT Game-Winner for Huskies - 3-2 Over Saint Joseph’s

GORHAM, Maine   –  Junior Bri Townsend (Newport, Maine/Nokomis) scored twice, including the overtime game-winner to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a thrilling 3-2 win over the Saint Joseph's College (Maine) Monks in a non-conference field hockey game Monday night at Hannaford Field.

Townsend scored her fourth goal of the season in the 64th minute to seal the sudden victory of the Huskies.  Freshman Maddi Niles (Benton, Maine/Lawrence) recorded the Huskies' other goal in the 40th minute.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After a scoreless first half despite plenty of chances from both sides, Southern Maine and Saint Joseph's College combined for three goals in the third quarter.
  • Townsend gave the Huskies the 1-0 lead redirecting a pass from junior HJ Tuplin (Lisbon, Maine) in the 39th minute before Niles redirected in her first goal of the season on a driven assist from senior Olivia Staggs (Sabattus, Maine/Oak Hill). Staggs' assist is the first point of the season for the Huskies senior back.
  • Facing a two goal deficit with the fourth quarter looming, Saint Joseph's rallied for a late goal in the third to cut the Husky lead to one.  Zoey Lailer finished an assist from May Waryas with just 12 seconds to go in the third for a 2-1 game.
  • Both teams had significant changes in the fourth, with each team hitting the post, before SJC's Kienna Haley notched her eighth goal of the season to tie the game up in the 51st.  Haley benefitted from an outstanding feed from Ava Markham for the equalizer.
  • Going 7-v-7 to start the overtime period both teams raced up and down Hannaford Field before Townsend used a bit of individual brilliance at the top of the circle to free herself up and then hit a backhand shot around Monk goalkeeper Kimberly McLaughlin.  McLaughlin finished the game with eight assists in a strong effort.

INSIDE THE STATS:
  • USM outshot the Monks 17-0, and had a slight edge in penalty corners 10-8.  The Monks outshot USM 8-4 in the opening half, and had a 7-3 lead in penalty corners over the first two quarters.
  • Jaigan Boudreau is currently ranked first in NCAA Division III field hockey for defensive saves (10).
