Maddie Niles (Benton, Maine/Lawrence) scored twice, and senior
Eleanor Folsom (Winthrop, Maine) made six saves to preserve the shutout as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Worcester State University Lancers 3-0 in a non-conference field hockey game Thursday night at Couglin Field.
Junior
Bri Townsend (Newport, Maine/Nokomis) scored the opener and eventual game-winner in the first quarter for her team-leading fifth goal of the season and third game-winning goal of 2025.

Tonight's game marked the 28
th meeting between the University of Southern Maine and Worcester State University. After tonight's result the series is tied at 14-14. Southern Maine defeated the Lancers 4-1 at home in 2022, lost 3-2 in overtime in 2023, and fell 1-0 in 2024.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Pressuring early, Townsend put Southern Maine up 1-0 in the sixth minute receiving a cross-circle pass from sophomore Leah Thibodeau (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) following one of the Huskies five penalty corners of the contest.
- Niles doubled the Huskies' lead in the second quarter finishing an assist from junior Dylan Barr (Phippsburgh, Maine/Morse) in the 26th minute. Niles first goal of the a game allowed Southern Maine to carry a 2-0 lead into the break.
- Worcester State outshot the Huskies' 6-3 in the third quarter but the score remained 2-0 in favor of USM at the horn. Folsom made three of her saves in the frame, while senior Jaigan Boudreau (Dayton, Maine/Thorton Academy) save a goal off the line with her team-leading 11th Defensive Save of 2025.
- The Lancers continued to press for a goal in the fourth, registering a penalty corner and a pair of shots in the opening five minutes. Niles converted on the Huskies' first chance of the fourth quarter, carrying the ball down the left side of the field before cutting inside the circle and beating the WSU keeper to the nearside for the 3-0 final.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Jaigan Boudreau is currently ranked first in NCAA Division III field hockey for defensive saves (11).
- Earning her second shutout of the season, Folsom has eight in her career. Prior to tonight's contest, Folsom is ranked 30th in NCAA Division III in Saves Per Game (7.78), and 57th in Save Percentage (.787).

The Huskies travel to Worcester State on Thursday, October 2 (7:00 pm) before hosting Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday, October 4 (12:00 pm) in Little East Conference action during the University of Southern Maine's Homecoming weekend. Southern Maine then hosts UMaine Farmington on Tuesday, October 7 (4:00 pm).
