Huskies Drop Pair of Matches at Coast of Maine Classic

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of Southern Maine women's volleyball went 0-2 on Saturday at the Coast of Maine Classic. The Huskies dropped a five-set match to the hosting University of New England Nor'easters and then fell 3-0 to Maine Maritime Academy. Three Huskies, sophomores Ella Koehler (Pickerington, Ohio/Fairfield Christian Academy) and Macie Ahmer (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North), and freshman Reese Helisek (Halifax, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) had double-doubles in the match against UNE.
 
Koehler led the team in kills in both matches with 12 in the first match and nine in the second. She also recorded 10 digs in the match against UNE. Ahmer posted 20 assists and 12 digs against UNE and added 11 digs against Maine Maritime. Helisek had 14 digs and 11 assists in the early match.

UNE and Southern Maine have now played 66 times with the Nor'easters holding a 43-23 lead in the series.
 
How It Happened:
  • Southern Maine got out to a 6-1 lead in the first set and took the set 25-16 while never trailing. The Huskies recorded four aces in the set and 11 kills.
  • The second set saw the Huskies use a pair of 4-0 runs to turn a 19-16 deficit into a 24-20 lead. The win was sealed by a kill from Koheler to make the final score of the set 25-21. The Huskies recorded 15 kills and had a .367 hitting percentage in the set.
  • The Nor'easters led wire-to-wire in the third set to stay alive with a 25-13 win.
  • Southern Maine scored the first two points of the fourth set only for UNE to score the next five. After the sides traded points, the Huskies jumped ahead thanks to a 9-0 run that included four UNE attack errors and two aces by junior Amelia Beatty (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding). The Nor'easters were able to regain the lead with a 7-0 run of their own to go ahead 18-15 before pulling out a 25-20 win to tie the match at two sets apiece.
  • UNE took the tiebreaking set 17-15 to earn the win despite a strong effort from the Huskies in a back-and-forth battle.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • UNE led 57-44 in kills and had three players in double-figures. Hannah Nowell led all players with 19 followed by Chloe Miracle with 17.
  • Freshman Haylie Bidegain (Logan, N.M.) had 10 kills to rank second behind Koehler.
  • Hayley Shult had a game-high 37 assists for the Nor'easters.
  • The Huskies served the ball well with 14 aces led by four apiece from Beatty and junior Kylee Eubanks-Hemme (Rosamond, Cali.)

Series History:
Maine Maritime has extended their all-time series lead to 14-11.
 
How It Happened:
  • The Mariners won the opening set 25-14 after pulling away late with a 7-0 run. They recorded 13 kills, four aces and two blocks in the set.
  • Maine Maritime had seven aces in the second set and went up two sets to none with a 25-13 win.
  • The third set ended 25-16 in favor of the Mariners to give them the sweep.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Sydney Williams recorded 11 kills to lead all players as Maine Maritime led 38-21 in the category.
  • Maine Maritime had 16 aces to the Huskies' five with six coming from Hunnie Zuber-Stephens.
 
Up Next:
The Huskies will hit the road on Wednesday, September 6 for a non-conference match at Bates College at 6:00 pm.
