Colby Uses Big Third Inning to Defeat Huskies 5-4

GORHAM, Maine   –  Ryan Grace had a two-run double in the top of the third as part of a four-run inning as the Colby College Mules defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 5-4 in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday afternoon at Flaherty Field.

Colby defeated the Huskies by the exact score on March 4 in Waterville.

How It Happened:
  • Southern Maine jumped out in front of the Mules in the bottom of the second generating a pair of runs without recording a hit. After one out, the Huskies drew three consecutive walks to load the bases and senior Anthony Poole (South Portland, Maine) picked up a fielder's choice RBI as graduate student Sam Economy (Hampden, Maine) beat the play for the run.  USM went up 2-0 as junior Kyle Douin (Augusta, Maine/Cony) was intentionally walked to load the bases, again, and junior Chris Quigley, who moved up from third, scored on a wild pitch before the inning ended.
  • Colby roared back to take the lead in the top of the third. With one away, a walk, and back-to-back hit-by-pitch plays loaded the bases for the Mules and set the stage for Grace's two-run double to tie the game.  After another out was recorded, Myles Gythfeldt drove in a pair of runs with a single to left.
  • USM had two base runners in the bottom of the third on singles from Drew Scialdone and Economy, but both were stranded.  Up 4-2, the Mules made it 5-2 in the top of the fourth with a lead off homerun from Corey Aubuchon.
  • Quiet again offensively in the bottom of the fourth and fifth, the score remained unchanged. The Huskies began chipping away at their deficit with one run in the bottom of the sixth and seventh. Poole started things off in the sixth with a one-out double down the left field line before moving up a base on a wild pitch.  Sophomore Peter Keblinsky (Ellsworth, Maine) brought him home with a sac-fly RBI to center field to make the score 5-3.  In the seventh, Scialdone, who finished the game 3-for-5 at the plate, led off with a single to right, and then scored on two-out RBI single from freshman TJ Llerena (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy), making it a one-run game, 5-4.
  • USM looked poised to tie the game in the eighth with a lead off single from Douin, and runners on the corner with two outs, but Colby avoided the threat with a strikeout.  In the ninth, Southern Maine retired in order for the 5-4 final.
