Southern Maine and Husson Battle to Doubleheader Split

Coots Earns Fourth Shutout Win of the Season; Paradis Has Game-Deciding RBI

GORHAM, Maine  –   Sophomore Maddy Paradis (Salem, NH) had the game-winning RBI single in game two and freshman Mia Coots (Hartland, Maine/Nokomis) earned her fourth shutout victory of the season as the University of Southern Maine Huskies ended the Husson University Eagles 12-game win streak with a 1-0 win in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at the USM Softball Stadium.  Husson won game one 7-2 behind a 13-striketout performance from Sky Johnson.

Paradis finished the doubleheader 2-for-6 from the plate, including a double, with an RBI and a run scored.  Sophomore Finley Folkett (Morden, Manitoba) was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and senior Meaghan Dufresne (Mattapoisett, Mass.) went 3-for-6 with a double.

How It Happened: Game One – Husson 7, Southern Maine 2
  • Sky Johnson struck out 13 and limited the Huskies to six hits to earn the 7-2 win in game one.
  • The Eagles struck first scoring in the opening inning as Camryn King led off the game with a double to center field. King moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Tatyanna Biamby before scoring with heads up baserunning after a dropped third strike throw down to first.
  • McIntosh pitched well in the loss for Southern Maine and kept USM within a run, 1-0, until the top of the sixth inning.  Allowing just seven hits and three earned runs, McIntosh had five strikeouts in the loss.
  • Husson scored four runs in the sixth on two hits, a Husky error and three walks.  Lexi Volinsky, Lyndsee Reed each drew RBI walks in the inning, while a two-out error caused a pair of unearned runs for a 5-0 Eagle lead.
  • Trailing 5-0 and being held to just one hit through five innings, Southern Maine broke up the shutout with a run on three hits in the bottom of the sixth.  Sophomore Finley Folkett (Morden, Manitoba) had a pinch-hit single to lead off the inning, and moved up a base on a passed ball.  After back-to-back outs recorded by Johnson on a ground out and a strikeout, Husky junior Olivia Levasseur (Amesbury, Mass.) knocked an RBI single to right for a 5-1 deficit.
  • The Eagles added two more runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run single through the right side off of USM reliever Abby Lee (Southington, Conn.) to take a 7-1 lead into the final Husky at bat. Southern Maine again scored with two outs as sophomore Maddy Paradis (Salem, NH) hit a double off the fence in left. Paradis then scored as Folkett reached on an infield single and Husson had a throwing error to allow Paradis to score.  However, it was the final run for the Huskies in a 7-2 final.

Game Two – USM 1, Husson 0
  • Freshman Mia Coots (Hartland, Maine/Nokomis) held Husson to just three hits to earn her fourth shutout of the season as the Huskies snapped Husson's 12-game win streak with a 1-0 victory in game two.
  • Husson hurler Ana Lang pitched well in defeat punching out 12, and limiting USM to six hits.
  • The Huskies scored in the first inning and then used solid defense and a strong pitching performance to grind out the win. Folket started Southern Maine with a one-out single to shortstop, and advanced to second on the same play on a throwing error.  Lang picked up her second strikeout of the game to make it two outs before Paradis came through with a bloop single into center field for the RBI while Folkett used her speed to score the unearned Husky run.
  • Coots came back strong in the second and sat the Eagles in order, and continued to dictate play.  The Huskies had runners in the second and third inning as freshman Gwen Christie (Barnstead, NH) singled in the second, and junior Ella Bezanson (Amesbury, Mass.) reached safely in the third on an error, but both times, Lang battled back to keep the game 1-0.
  • Coots retired seven batters consecutively from the fourth through the first out of the sixth before allowing a double to left off of the bat from King. With one away and the tying run on second, Coots got some help on the next batter as Biamby lined into a double-play on strong defensive play from Christie at second base.  It was the second solo double-play of the game for Christie in the contest.
  • The Huskies looked for some insurance in the bottom of the sixth as senior Meaghan Dufresne (Mattapoisett, Mass.) put herself into scoring position with a double to left, but Lang again erased the threat.  In the Eagles' final at bat in the top of the seventh, Coots got the first out with a pop-up foul ball before Husson' Tori Excel singled through the right side.  After a stolen base put the tying runner on second with one out, Coots came back with a strikeout for the second out and then ended the game catching an infield pop fly for the 1-0 win.
