Southern Maine Romps UMaine Farmington 21-0

Kyle Douin with 5 RBI; Mike Anquillare Grand Slam for 4 RBI

GORHAM, Maine  -  Junior Kyle Douin (Augusta, Maine/Cony) was 4-for-6 at the plate with four runs scored and five RBI to lead a 15-hit attack as the University of Southern Maine Huskies routed the UMaine Farmington Beavers 21-0 in a non-conference baseball game Thursday afternoon at Ed Flaherty Field.

In a planned bullpen day, the Huskies seven different pitchers to hold the Beavers to just two hits in the shutout victory.  Sophomore Carson Black (Porter, Maine/Sacopee Valley) earned the win allowing one hit in two innings with a pair of strikeouts.  Sophomore Colin McDonald (Gorham, Maine) struck out the side in his relief appearance, while junior Kyle Skolfield (Gorham, Maine) had four strikeouts in a two-inning appearance.

Sophomore Mike Anquillare (North Haven, Conn.) had four RBI with an eighth inning grand slam to highlight a big offensive day for Southern Maine. Senior Anthony Poole (South Portland, Maine) was 3-for-4 at the plate with five runs and a pair of RBI – he also drew three walks. Senior Jack LeBlond (Lewiston, Maine/Bridgton Academy), junior Chris Quigley (Halifax, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) and freshman Drew Scialdone (Amesbury, Mass.) each had two hits. LeBlond had a pair of RBI and a pair of doubles, while Scialdone had a double.

How It Happened:
  • The Huskies started the scoring early as Douin smacked a two-run home run in the first after Poole drew a lead off walk for a quick 2-0 lead. Adding an unearned run on a passed ball the Huskies took a 3-0 lead headed into the second inning.  Southern Maine continued to pour on the runs in the second scoring three more times to lead 6-0.  Douin had a two-run single while LeBlond's first double of the game drove in another.
  • With McDonald striking out the side in the top of the third, Southern Maine increased its lead to 11-0 with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Poole had an RBI single to start the scoring, and LeBlond had an RBI ground out.  The other three Husky runs were scored off of errors and a wild pitch.
  • After a quiet fourth and top of the fifth as Skolfield picked up two of his strikeouts in the inning, Southern Maine increased its lead to 12-0 on an RBI single up the middle from Scialdone.
  • In the sixth, the Beavers had runners on first and second on back-to-back walks from Sam Parsell and Ike Wrigley, but Husky freshman Jackson Emery (Vernon, Vermont/Brattleboro Union) bounced back with a strikeout a fielder's choice grounder and a line-out to keep UMF off the scoreboard.
  • The score remained unchanged through the top of the eighth with Southern Maine holding a commanding 12-0 lead before the Huskies struck for a crooked number scoring nine runs in the bottom of the eighth to balloon their lead to 21-0. With the bases loaded on back-to-back walks from sophomore Grady Hotham (Palermo, Maine/Erskine Academy) and Poole, and Douin being hit by a pitch, sophomore Peter Keblinksy (Ellsworth, Maine) earned the RBI after being hit as well.  With the bases still loaded and no outs and the Huskies up 13-0, Anquillare bombed a bases clearing home run to center field for four more runs and a 17-0 lead.
  • Batting around the lineup, the Huskies scored four more times.  Hotham had a fielder's choice RBI and Poole had an RBI single to second to lead 19-0 before Hotham stole home to make it 20-0.  Douin drove in the final run of the game with a single through the right side scoring Poole.
  • In the top of the ninth, Keblinsky moved from shortstop to pitcher and closed the game earning a pair of strikeouts.
