PORTLAND, Maine – The University of Southern Maine men's tennis team came up short in a Little East Conference match falling to the UMass Boston Beacons 5-4 on Wednesday in Portland. Seniors
Zach Desmarais (St. Cyrille, Quebec) and
Azam Jiwa (Calgary, Alberta) recorded an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles and Desmarais also came from behind to win his match at No. 3 singles 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.
Junior
Landon Weaver (Bowdoinham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) and sophomore
Kayde Kinaschuk (Calgary, Alberta) also picked up singles wins. Weaver cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 3 slot while Kinaschuk grinded out a marathon win at No. 6 singles to close out the match. Two of his sets went to the tie break but Kinaschuk prevailed 7-6 (7-2), 1-6, 76 (7-3).
The Huskies celebrated Senior Day prior to the game and honored Desmarais, Jiwa,
Jaden Parker (Portland, Maine),
Zac Howe (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy) and
Jacob Kindestin (Barre,Vt./ Champlain Valley Union).
