Pattershall and D’Appolonia Lead Huskies to 19-9 Win over Spartans

CASTLETON, Vt. – Sophomore Eliza Pattershall (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook) scored three goals and had a team-leading five draw controls for the University of Southern Maine women's lacrosse team on Saturday in a 19-9 win against the Vermont State University Castleton Spartans. Junior Katelyn D'Appolonia (Yarmouth, Maine) also scored four goals and added an assist for five total points. Her four draw controls were second on the team behind Pattershall's five.
 
Eight Huskies had multiple points in the game. Fifth-year senior Kiaya Gatchell (Portland, Maine/Deering) and junior Maddie Kinney (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat) each had four points as well, Gatchell had a hat trick and an assist while Kinney had two goals and two assists. Junior Cierra Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) scored a goal and had an assist. Senior Elaina Hanselmann (Sanford, Maine), sophomore Raegan Bechard (Augusta, Maine/Cony) and senior Anna Byers (Milford, Ct./ Joseph A. Foran) each scored two goals.
 
Senior Lydia Laslavic (Thomaston, Maine / Oceanside) made four saves to earn her 10th win of the season. She will tie the program single season record of 11 held by Kim Vogel (2013) and Cece Racine (2022) with her next win.

Series History:
The Huskies lead the all-time series 16-6 and have now won the last eight games in the series.

VTSU Castleton: Katie Stager (4-11), 60:00, 19 goals allowed, eight saves
 
How It Happened:
  • The Huskies kicked off the game with five goals in the first four minutes to take a commanding lead. Kinney scored the first goal while D'Appolonia scored twice. Castleton cut the lead to 5-2 with back-to-back goals by Gianna Geraci before the Huskies ended the quarter on a 4-1 run that featured goals by Gatchell, Bechard, Hill and Byers.  
  • D'Appolnia scored two more goals in the second quarter as the Huskies outscored the Spartans 4-1.
  • Hanselmann extended the lead to 14-4 just over three minutes into the third quarter. The Spartans then had two free-position goals in the span of 1:07 to make the score 14-6. Gatchell ended the quarter with two goals to get the lead back to 10 goals. Hill assisted on the first goal and the second was a woman-up goal.
  • Each team scored three times in the final quarter. Renny Cota scored twice for Castleton while Pattershall had two of the Southern Maine goals.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The Huskies had a 27-15 lead in shots on goal and had a slight 25-24 lead in ground balls. Kinney led the Huskies with four while Gatchell and D'Appolonia each had three. Brianna Paul and Megan Ward led the Spartans with six and five.
  • Southern Maine led 17-14 in draw controls.
  • Gatchell, Cierra Hill and junior Britney Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) each caused two turnovers.

The Huskies will travel to face Rhode Island College on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
