Huskies Suffer 17-5 Setback at Plymouth State

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The University of Southern Maine women's lacrosse team was defeated by the Plymouth State University Panthers on Wednesday evening by a score of 17-5 in a game that snapped the Huskies' three-game winning streak. Maddie Hunt powered the Panther offense with seven goals while junior Cierra Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) led the Huskies with a hat trick. Junior Katelyn D'Appolonia (Yarmouth, Maine) accounted for the other two Southern Maine goals. Four of the Huskies' five goals came on free-position shots. Plymouth State moves to 5-0 in conference play while Huskies drop to 3-2.

The Panthers lead the all-time series 34-3 including LEC playoff wins against the Huskies in each of the last two seasons.

Southern Maine: Lydia Laslavic (9-6), 60:00, 17 goals allowed, 10 saves
Plymouth State: Margie Black (11-2), 60:00, five goals allowed, seven saves
 
How It Happened:
  • Hill got the Huskies on the board with a free-position goal 29 seconds into the first quarter. However, the rest of the quarter was all Panthers as Plymouth State scored five unanswered goals. Jenna Stowell recorded two of those goals with one of them coming with the Panthers up a woman. Sammy Murphy logged a goal in two assists in the quarter.
  • Plymouth State extended their lead to 10-1 with another five goals before D'Appolonia converted a free-position attempt with 2:36 left in the half. Hunt and Morgan Cunningham each scored twice, and Cunningham had an assist as well. Stowell also scored to complete her hat trick.
  • The Panthers remained in control of the game with four goals in a five-minute span in the third quarter before the Huskies had back-to-back goals from Hill to cut the lead to 14-4.
  • D'Appolonia scored a woman-up goal on a free-position shot in the fourth quarter for her 40th goal of the season. The Panthers ended the game on a 3-0 win with two goals by Hunt and another by Julia Donovan.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Plymouth led 38-17 in total shots and 27-12 in shots on goal.
  • Stowell posted a game-high eight draw controls while her teammate Megan Gaspa finished one behind her with eight. The Panthers led 20-5 in the category. Hill had three of her team's five draw controls.
  • The Panthers finished with a slight 17-16 lead in ground balls. Donovan paced the Panthers with four while junior Britney Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) and Sophomore Alivia Johnston (Oakland, Maine/ Messalonskee) led the Huskies with three apiece.
  • The Huskies committed 16 turnovers while the Panthers committed 11.

The Huskies have another conference road game on Saturday at Vermont State University Castleton. Saturday's game will start at noon.
