No. 4 Endicott Defeats Southern Maine 21-7

GORHAM, Maine   –  The No. 4 Endicott College Gulls scored eight runs in the first, and went on two score at least one run in eight of nine innings to earn a 21-7 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday afternoon at Ed Flaherty Field.

The Gulls won their 15th consecutive game with the victory, combined for their 21 runs on 15 hits. Kyle Grabowski and John Mulready each had three hits and a pair of RBI to highlight Endicott.

Led by a 3-for-5 effort from sophomore Peter Keblinsky (Ellsworth, Maine) the Huskies collected nine hits. Senior Jack Leblond (Lewiston, Maine/Bridgton Academy) joined Keblinsky as a repeat-hitter, going 2-for-3 with a double and a triple, and a pair of RBI.  Graduate student Sam Economy (Hampden, Maine) had three RBI on a 1-for-3 mark with a double.

How It Happened:
  • Endicott collected five of its 15 hits in the top of the first, including a two-run double from TJ Liponis to open up an 8-0 advantage. The Huskies played themselves back into the game with five runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by Economy's three-run double to right field.
  • The Gulls led 10-5 after two with two runs on two hits and two walks, including an RBI single from Mulready.
  • After a scoreless second from USM and scoreless top of the third from the Gulls, Southern Maine cut its deficit to four runs, 10-6, in the bottom of the third.  Junior Dylan Firmin (Stratham, NH/Exeter) got the Huskies going with a two-out single to right before LeBlond laced a double to center for an RBI.
  • After the third, Endicott's pitching rotation, which featured five, kept the Huskies off the board until the bottom of the eight. Chris Jenkins, the Gulls' pitcher of record, entered in the bottom of the fourth with the Huskies' threatening with runners on first and second and two outs to close the inning with a strikeout. Jenkins pitched the fifth and sixth, taking the Huskies in order in the fifth and working around a fielding error in the sixth as his offense grew the Gull lead to 14-6.
  • Endicott continued to separate from the Huskies with a run in the top of the seventh and three more in the top of the eighth to lead 18-6.  Southern Maine made it 18-7 on a sacrifice fly RBI from freshman TJ Llerena (Hampden, Maine), but the Gulls tacked on three more following a three-run home run from Caleb Clark in the top of the ninth. Except for a one-out single from Keblinsky in the home half of the final inning, the Huskies were unable to generate any offense for the 21-7 final.

Up Next:
