Bowdoin Walks Off Southern Maine 5-4

BRUNSWICK, Maine   –  After a 10-pitch at-bat, Reuben Siegel connected on an RBI single through the right side to deliver the Bowdoin College Polar Bears a 5-4 walk-off win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night at Pickard Field.

Trailing 4-2, Bowdoin scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to tied the game, and then used a pair of hits and a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the ninth to generate the game-winning run.

How It Happened:
  • After a scoreless first, Southern Maine jumped in front 2-0 in the second inning. With the bases loaded following two walks and a hit by pitch, graduate student Sam Economy (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) doubled down the left field line to pick up two RBI.
  • Southern Maine starter freshman Riley O'Brien (Woodstock, Conn./Woodstock Academy) worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the second forcing three consecutive ground outs from the Polar Bears.  O"Brien pitched through four innings allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks in a strong rookie performance.
  • The Huskies increased their lead to 3-0 in the top of the third. With two on and two outs, Husky sophomore Mike Anquillare (North Haven, Conn.) put the ball in play, and Bowdoin committed the first of its two errors in the game allowing junior Peter Keblinsky (Ellsworth, Maine) to score.
  • O'Brien kept the score 3-0 after the bottom of the third working around a pair of singles, and getting help defensively as catcher junior Dylan Firmin (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) erased a runner trying to steal third.
  • After a quiet fourth from USM, Bowdoin rallied for two runs in the home half of the inning.  Chris Dirks had an RBI double through the right side, and L. Foley scored on a passed ball.
  • The score remained unchanged through the sixth inning before Southern Maine made it a 4-2 Husky lead with a run in the top of the seventh.  Senior Anthony Poole (South Portland, Maine) and junior Kyle Douin (Augusta, Maine/Cony) went for back-to-back singles to start the inning.  Keblinsky earned the RBI with a sacrifice fly to center field driving in Poole.  Bowdoin thwarted a potential big inning for the Huskies, however, getting a double-play to end the inning.
  • Down two runs in the bottom of the eighth, Bowdoin used a leadoff double from Kevin Murray, and an RBI single from Lukas Tsai to make it 4-3.  After a sacrifice bunt moved a runner up to second in scoring position, but Polar Bears scored the game-tying run on a passed ball and a throwing error for a 4-4 ball game.
  • In the ninth, Southern Maine earned a pair of base runners, including a two-out single through the right side to put runners on first and second, but Bowdoin's Will Bordes came back with a strikeout to end the inning.  Bowdoin led off the bottom of the ninth with a single from Will Cooke. Cooke moved up into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt before Siegel hit the game-winner. Cooke slid to beat the tag on a strong throw from right field from junior Hunter Brissette (Lisbon, Maine).

Up Next:
The Huskies remain on the road and take on No. 6 Endicott College (3:30 pm) in a non-conference match-up.  Southern Maine is scheduled to host UMass Dartmouth on Saturday (12 pm) in a Little East Conference doubleheader.
