Huskies Drops Conference Opener to Buccaneers 17-7

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Quinn Mucha had five goals and an assist and James Sullivan had three goals and an assist as the Massachusetts Maritime Academy Buccaneers defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 17-7 on Saturday evening. Ryan McDonough also scored three goals while Daniel Kane had two goals and two assists.
 
Sophomore Pat O'Driscoll (Biddeford, Maine) led the Huskies with four goals and an assist to extend his scoring streak to nine games. Sophomore Owen Gaulrapp (Windham, Maine) assisted on two goals and sophomore Adam Coley (Valencia, Cail./Cheshire) had a goal and an assist.

How It Happened:
  • The Buccaneers scored five times in the first quarter with Kane scoring twice and assisting on a goal. Mucha also had two points in the quarter with a goal and an assist. O'Driscoll and Gaulrapp teamed up for the Southern Maine goal.
  • Mucha scored again early in the second quarter before the Huskies cut the lead down to 6-5 with a 4-0 run that featured goals by O'Driscoll, freshman Rodrigo Araujo (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston), junior Rhys Bridges (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) and Coley. The latter two goals were both up-goals. The Buccaneers ended the half with two goals in the final two minutes to take an 8-5 lead into the break.
  • The Buccaneers extended their lead to 8-5 with three unanswered goals in the third quarter before O'Driscoll scored again to make the score 11-6 heading into the final 15 minutes.
  • Mass. Maritime ended the game by outscoring the Huskies 6-1 in the fourth quarter for the 17-7 final.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The Buccaneers led 37-20 in shots on goal and 50-19 in ground balls.
  • Mass. Maritime won 21-of-27 faceoffs. Cole Jenkins went 17-for-22 and had a game-high 10 ground balls.
  • Sophomore Nick Shevchenko (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) led the Huskies with four ground balls and won five faceoffs.
  • Coley and senior Duncan Hayes (Augusta, Maine/Cony) each caused two turnovers.
