Bulldogs Best Huskies 12-1

FRANKLIN, Mass. – Alec Speirs and Diego Alvarez-Segee each recorded five points as the Dean College Bulldogs defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies by a score of 12-1 in a non-conference men's lacrosse contest on Wednesday afternoon. Speirs had three goals and two assists while Alvarez-Segee scored four goals and had an assist. Manny Alvarez-Segee also contributed four points with two goals and two assists. Junior Rhys Bridges (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) scored for the Huskies in the fourth quarter with freshman Rodrigo Araujo (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) assisting on the goal.
 
Elijah Beland earned the win and made five saves in the first three quarters before being replaced by Dane Duarte.

The Bulldogs and Huskies have now played three times. Dean leads the series 3-0.

How It Happened:
  • The Alvarez-Segee brothers had a hand in all four first quarter goals for the Bulldogs. Diego got the scoring started with a goal 37 seconds into the game and then Manny doubled the lead 1:16 later. The brothers teamed up for the third goal with Manny passing to Diego. The fourth Dean goal came from Speirs with Manny Alvarez-Segee providing the assist.
  • Speirs scored twice in the second quarter and each Alvarez-Segee brother scored as well to put the Bulldogs ahead 8-0 at the half.
  • Dean added two more goals in the third quarter to take a 10-0 lead. Speirs assisted on both scores, first on Kyle Pianka's goal and then on a goal by Diego Alvarez-Segee.
  • A Connor McCarthy goal put Dean ahead 11-0 with 10:32 left in the quarter. The Huskies finally broke through on a goal by Bridges from Araujo with 5:14 to go. The final goal of the afternoon came with eight seconds left in the game when Pianka passed to Aj Woodward to make the score 12-1.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Dean had a 33-10 lead in shots on goal.
  • All goals were scored at even-strength as both teams went 0-for-5 with the extra man.
  • The teams each won eight faceoffs with sophomore Nick Shevchenko (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) recording all eight wins for the Huskies. Josh Hackett won five for Dean while Gavin McCarthy went 2-for-2 and Collin Murphy was 1-for-1.
  • The Huskies led 38-36 in ground balls. Sophomore Owen Gaulrapp (Windham, Maine) led all players with five followed by Shevchenko, Dietz and sophomore Lucas Rego (Dracut, Mass./Lowell Catholic) each recording four.
  • Dean had 16 caused turnovers with Ryan Clunie recording six.

The next game for Southern Maine will be on Sunday at noon against Western Connecticut State University at home.
