Late Rally Falls Short as Southern Maine Drops to Amherst 7-5

LAKE MYRTLE, Fla.   –  Juniors Hunter Brissette (Lisbon, Maine/Lisbon Falls) and Kyle Douin (Augusta, Maine/Cony) each went 2-for-4 at the plate with an extra base hit and an RBI but it was not enough as the University of Southern Maine Huskies ninth-inning rally fell short in a 7-5 loss to the Amherst College Mammoths Tuesday night at the RussMatt Invitational.

How It Happened:
  • Scoring three runs in the top of the fourth, the Mammoths led the Huskies 5-0. Amherst took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first scoring off the first of four Husky fielding errors, and then led 2-0 after the second on a solo home run from Ben Smith.  In the fourth, Amherst added two more unearned runs as J. Orridge made it 3-0 scoring on a wild pitch after reaching safely with a one-out single.  The Mammoths scored two more on the same play as a potential third-out was mishandled, and Jack Boyle and Aiden Dubetsky each scored unearned.  Dubestky reached after being hit by a pitch, and Boyle reached on a walk.
  • The Huskies took one run bac in the bottom of sixth to make it a four-run game, 5-1 in favor of Amherst. Junior Kyle Douin (Augusta, Maine/Cony) laced a one-out triple down the right field line and then scored on a throwing error from an Amherst infielder on the relay for the Southern Maine run.
  • Amherst made it 7-1 in the top of the seventh. Tyler McCord and Charlie LaFrenier each had an RBI single.
  • After a scoreless eight and top of the ninth inning with senior Lucas Francis (Lisbon, Maine) on the mound as Southern Maine's fifth pitcher of the game, the Huskies put together a rally in the bottom of the ninth. Francis reached after being hit by a pitch and moved up to third on back-to-back balks. Senior Jack LeBlond (Lewiston, Maine/Bridgton Academy)  and junior Chris Quigley (Halifax, Mass./Silver Lake Regional)  each reached on a hit by pitch and walk respectively around an out and the Huskies had the bases loaded.  Brissette picked up the RBI after he was hit by a pitch, making it 7-2, before LeBlond made it 7-3 scoring on a wild pitch moving runners up to third and second.
  • With one out and two on, senior Anthony Poole (South Portland, Maine)  drove in a run and reached safely on an infield error from the Mammoths, making it 7-4 before Douin made it 7-5 with a sacrifice fly RBI to center field scoring Brisette.  However, Amherst was able to keep the win getting the final out of the inning for the 7-5 final.
