Southern Maine Splits With St. Lawrence; Drops Game One 3-2, Wins Game Two 9-7

LAKE MYRTLE, Fla.   –  Sophomore Mike Anquillare (North Haven, Conn.) delivered a two-out, two-run double with the bases loaded as part of a four-run sixth inning rally for the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a 9-7 win over the St. Lawrence University Saints in the second game of a doubleheader at Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, Fla. Sophomore Peter Keblinsky (Ellsworth, Maine) then closed out the game in the top of the seventh for his first save as a Husky to give Southern Maine a split on the day. St. Lawrence took the first game of the doubleheader 3-2 on a walk-off error.

Freshman Riley O'Brien (Woodstock, Conn.) threw 2.2 shutout innings in relief in the second game to earn the first win of his career. He retired eight of the nine batters he faced and had three strikeouts. His lone baserunner came from an error.

How It Happened – Game One
  • Southern Maine took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when junior Kyle Douin (Augusta, Maine/Cony) scored on a fielding error to conclude an eventful trip around the bases. Douin drew a two-out walk, advanced to second on a failed pickoff and then moved to third on a wild pitch.
  • Keblinsky drove in Poole on a sacrifice fly in the third inning to extend the lead to 2-0.
  • Sophomore Colin McDonald (Gorham, Maine) retired the first 10 batters he faced before allowing a single to Timothy Connor. He then worked around an error on a fielder's choice to get out of the inning and struck out the side in the bottom of the fifth.
  • St. Lawrence broke through in the bottom of the sixth when John Donnellan was hit by a pitch then advanced to second on a wild pitch and eventually scored on a ground out by Connor.
  • McDonald got the first batter in the bottom of the seventh to ground out but left the game with one out and two runners on after Jack Finnegan singled and Sean Desjardins was hit by a pitch. Francis shifted over to the mound from third base and loaded the bases by hitting Matt Davis. Donnellan then hit into a fielder's choice with the lead runner getting put out at home to bring up Mike Siano with two outs and the bases loaded. Siano was hit by a pitch to force in the tying run and Connor gave the Saints a walk-off 3-2 win on batter later.

How It Happened – Game Two
  • The Saints scored three runs in the first inning off Huskies' starter Gavin Rawstron (Sabattus, Maine/Oak Hill) on two hits and a Husky error. Connor drove in Siano, who reached on an error, with a double to right field and then Brett Federico blasted a triple in the same direction. Federico scored on a sacrifice fly by John Gannon to extend the lead to 3-0.
  • Anquillare singled to left field in the bottom of the second inning and made his way to third on an error on a Francis fielder's choice and a sacrifice bunt by senior Jack LeBlond (Lewiston, Maine/Bridgton Academy). A wild pitch allowed Anquillare to score and Francis to move up to third. Senior Connor Burgess (Halifax, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) drew a walk then junior Chris Quigley (Halifax, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) singled through the right side to score Francis. Poole was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Douin cleared them with a double to right field to put the Huskies ahead 5-3.
  • St. Lawrence took advantage of five free passes and a hit batter from junior relief pitcher Jack Bruno (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc Regional) in the top of the fourth to take a 7-5. O'Brien replaced Bruno on the mound and pitched well with three strikeouts over the next 2.2 innings while not allowing a hit or a walk.
  • Burgess and Quigley were both hit by pitches in the sixth inning to start the Huskies rally. Both runners scored on a single up the middle by Poole. Douin then had a base hit to right and the Saints turned to Michael Flyzik with two runners on and two outs. He walked Keblinsky to load the bases for Anquillare who then ripped a double to put the Huskies ahead 9-7.
  • Keblinsky took over on the mound and hit the first batter he faced before getting the next hitter to fly out and striking out a pinch-hitter. Daniel Verrastro singled to right field to put runners on the corners with two outs and Donnellan grounded out to third to end the game.

Inside the Box Score
  • McDonald's nine strikeouts in the first game are most by a Husky in a game this season.
  • Anquillare went 3-for-4 in the second game and is the second Husky with a three-hit game this season. Poole had the first in Friday's 17-0 win against La Roche University.
