How It Happened:
  • Southern Maine led 3-0 after the top of the fourth inning.  Junior Peter Keblinsky (Ellsworth, Maine) drove in USM's first run of the contest with an infield single in the top of the first.  After a scoreless second, the Huskies made it 2-0 in the top of the third. Junior Kyle Douin (Augusta, Maine/Cony) reached on a one-out single, and moved up to scoring position at third base on back-to-back fielding errors from the Redhawks.  Douin scored USM's run after a fielder's choice ground out RBI from senior Lucas Francis (Lisbon, Maine).
  • In the bottom of the third, Husky starter freshman Sam Calder (Monmouth, Maine)  worked his way around a pair of base runners in scoring position with a strikeout and a ground out to keep USM in front 2-0.
  • USM went up 4-0 in the top of the fourth as senior Hunter Brissette launched a two-out solo home run to left,  However, Ripon scored twice with two outs on singles from Gabriel Zielinksi and Owen Gerhardt.
  • The Huskies bounced back in the top of the fifth with two runs of their own taking advantage of a single from Keblinsky, a walk from sophomore Mike Anquillare (North Haven, Conn.)  and an infield error from Ripon to lead 5-2.
  • Ripon surged ahead in the home half of the fifth collecting five hits, two walks and a hit-by-pitch off of Husky relief pitchers.  Olson drove in the third and fourth runs of the inning to put Ripon ahead, while a double from Jason Clark and a trip from Zielinski made it 8-5.  Gerhardt picked up a ground out RBI in the inning for the 9-5 scoreline.
  • After a combined nine runs in the fifth inning, both teams were scoreless in the sixth, seventh and eighth.  Brisette doubled to lead off the sixth for USM but was stranded, and in the seventh Anquillare led off with a double and reached third before being left on base. In the eighth, Brisette led off with a single but did not move up a base as Ripon pitchers bounced back each time.
  • In the top of the ninth, the Huskies scored twice on a two-out triple from Chris Quigley making it a 9-7 game, but R. Bayer closed the door getting a fly out to end the inning.
