Big First Half Leads Southern Maine to 12-5 Win over UMaine Farmington

GORHAM, Maine – Junior Katelyn D'Appolonia (Yarmouth, Maine) scored six goals and had two assists for a career-high eight points as the University of Southern Maine women's lacrosse team defeated the UMaine Farmington Beavers 12-5 on Saturday afternoon. All six of her scores came in the first half with four occurring in the first quarter. She also led the Huskies with three draw controls. Junior Maddie Kinney (Topsham, Maine/ Mt. Ararat) added two goals and an assist to the offensive output while fifth-year Kiaya Gatchell (Portland, Maine/Deering) scored twice and led the Huskies in ground balls with six.
 
Sophomore Lizzy Hallee (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills) recorded the first two points for her collegiate career with a goal and an assist. Senior Elaina Hanselmann (Sanford, Maine) also scored a goal while junior Cierra Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) had an assist plus five ground balls, two caused turnovers and a draw control. Junior Britney Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) contributed three ground balls, two draw controls a a caused turnover.
 
Senior Lydia Laslavic (Thomaston, Maine/Oceanside) made three saves and earned the win. Freshman Cally Dow (Lewiston, Maine) relieved Laslavic in net and made three saves in her collegiate debut.
 
Farmington's offense was led by Ruby McMinis and Abby Trefsger with two goals each.

How It Happened:
  • D'Appolonia and the Huskies came out firing and scored 2:24 into the game. D'Appolonia then went on the score a pair of up-goals and a free-position goal in the quarter. Gatchell also successfully converted a free-position attempt as the Huskies took a 5-0 lead into the second quarter.  
  • The Huskies scored six more times in the second quarter with D'Appolonia and Kinney scoring twice each and Hallee and Hanselmann recording goals as well. Kinney, D'Appolonia and Hallee all had assists during the 6-0 run.
  • Gatchell scored on a feed from D'Appolonia 2:02 into the second to extend the lead to 12-0. The score remained that way until McMinis scored for the Beavers in the final minute of the quarter to spoil the shutout.
  • McMinis scored an up-goal five minute into the final quarter to bring the score to 12-2. The Beavers then had back-to-back goals from Trefsger to cut the lead to 12-4 with 7:14 left to play.
  • Farmington got one last goal from Ashlee Farrar to make the score 12-5 with 3:50 to go.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The Huskies dominated the shots on goal 33-11 and ground balls 33-17.
  • Southern Maine went 3-for-9 on free-position shots while UMaine Farmington was 1-for-3.
  • Emma Dunn had seven draw controls for the Beavers and they led 10-8 overall.
  • D'Appolonia has had multiple points in every game this season with 22 goals and six assists through the Huskies first six games.
