D’Appolonia Breaks Single-Game Goals and Points Records in 21-7 Rout of Clark

GORHAM, Maine – Junior Katelyn D'Appolonia (Yarmouth, Maine) set new University of Southern Maine women's lacrosse records for goals in a single game with 11 and points with 13 on Wednesday evening as part of a 21-7 victory against the Clark University Cougars. D'Appolonia scored eight times and had an assist in the first half. She broke both records in the fourth quarter with her first of two goals in the final quarter. The previous record for goals was nine held by both Sarah Pelligrinelli and Jacki Kelly. Pelligrinelli had nine goals against UMass Dartmouth on April 25, 2015, and Kelly scored nine against Eastern Connecticut State University on April 21, 2012. The record of 11 points in a game was shared by Rachel Shanks and Aliza Jordan. Shanks had 11 points against Vermont State University Castleton on April 2, 2022, while Jordan tallied 11 against UMass Dartmouth on April 25, 2019.
 
Junior Maddie Kinney (Topsham, Maine/ Mt. Ararat) assisted on five goals to tie for the third-most helpers in a game in program history. The Huskies also had five goals and an assist from junior Cierra Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy). Fifth-year Kiaya Gatchell (Portland, Maine/Deering) had two goals and Southern Maine also had goals from senior Elaina Hanselmann (Sanford, Maine), junior Molly Black (Windham, Maine) and junior Raegan Bechard (Augusta, Maine/Cony).
 
Elizabeth Cacciapaglia and Erin Lucas each had two goals and an assist for Clark. Meghan Fogarty also contributed two goals for the Cougars.

How It Happened:
  • The Huskies raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game and ran the score up to 8-0 before Clark got on the board with a goal by Cacciapaglia with 4:37 left in the quarter. Fogarty added a second Clark goal with 18 seconds left in the quarter. D'Appolonia had half of the goals for the Huskies while Gatchell scored twice and Hill and Hanselmann also had goals. Kinney had three assists in the quarter.
  • Fogarty scored again tin the first minute of the second quarter to make the score 8-3 before the Huskies answered with seven unanswered goals to end the half. Four of those goals came from D'Appolonia with two being scored on free-position attempts. Hill had two goals in the run and Black also scored. Three man-up goals and another D'Appolonia tally extended the Southern Maine lead to 19-3 at the end of the third quarter. Hill and D'Appolonia each had an assist in the quarter. Bechard also had a score.
  • D'Appolonia's record-breaking goal came 2:57 into the fourth quarter and extended the lead to 20-4 following a free-position goal by Clark's Lucas. Her last goal of the night came with just under seven minutes left after Kinney set her up in front of the net for the score. Clark scored three times in the final five minutes for the 21-7 final, including a goal by Sydney McMonagle in the closing seconds of the game that was assisted by Lucas.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The Huskies put 28 shots on goal compared to Clark's 15 and led in ground balls 15-7.
  • The Huskies played tough defense with 11 caused turnovers led by Hill with two.
  • Clark had a slight 16-14 lead in draw controls. Cacciapaglia and Lucas each had six while D'Appolonia and Black led the Huskies with five.
  • Southern Maine went 5-for-6 on free-position shots.
  • D'Appolonia now has 41 points (33 goals and eight assists) through the first seven games of the season.
  • The Huskies have won their last four games and have outscored their opponents 59-31 during that stretch.
  • Kinney has 13 assists so far this season to lead the team.
