LAKE MYRTLE, Fla.   –  Fifth-year Lucas Francis (Lisbon, Maine) launched a four-run home run as part of a five-run bottom of the first as the University of Southern Maine Huskies rolled to a 17-0 (7 inning) win over the LaRoche University Redhawks.

How It Happened:
  • Southern Maine scored all five of its runs on two outs as LaRoche starter Eli Thomas loaded the bases.  Graduate student Sam Economy (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) drew a walk with the bases full for the first run, and Francis connected on the four-run shot to put USM up 5-0.
  • Carson, who bounced back from a game-opening walk in the first to retire the next three consecutively, including two Ks, had a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the second helped out by a double-play.
  • Southern Maine put the game away in the second batting around its lineup and scoring 10 runs for a 15-0 lead. The Huskies collected six hits in the inning, including a two-run double from sophomore Mike Anquillare (North Haven, Conn.).
  • Both teams were scoreless through the fifth inning.  Carson battled his way out of trouble in the top of the fifth getting back-to-back outs with the bases loaded, including an inning-ending strikeout to keep LaRoche off of the board.
  • Starting the top of the sixth, Husky sophomore Ian Libby (Gray, Maine/Gray New Gloucester), worked his way around a lead-off double and a walk holding the Redhawks at bay with three consecutive strikeouts – including a looking K to end the inning.
  • The Huskies tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 17-0 final. Senior Anthony Poole (South Portland, Maine) and senior Joe Bova (Boston, Mass./The Winchendon School) each had an RBI.  Junior Kyle Skolfield (Gorham, Maine) closed the game giving up a lead-off walk but coming back for three straight outs.
