D'Appolonia and Gatchell Lead Huskies to 13-8 Win Over Monks

GORHAM, Maine – Junior Katleyn D'Appolonia (Yarmouth, Maine) scored four goals and had an assist while fifth-year Kiaya Gatchell (Portland, Maine/Deering) logged four points with a hat trick and an assist to give the University of Southern Maine women's lacrosse team a 13-8 win over the Saint Joseph's College Monks. Tonight's win was the first for the Huskies against the Monks since March 20, 2014. Senior Anna Byers (Milford, Ct./ Joseph A. Foran), junior Cierra Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) and Molly Black (Windham, Maine) each scored twice for the Huskies while junior Maddie Kinney (Topsham, Maine/ Mt. Ararat) had two assists.
 
Taylor Dumond and Mackenzie Siebert had hat tricks for the Monks and Celia Melanson contributed two goals and an assist. Senior Lydia Laslavic (Thomaston, Maine/Oceanside) made six saves to earn the win.

Series History:
The two local rivals have now played 14 times with the Huskies leading the series 8-6. The Monks entered the game as the winners of the last six games in the series after the Huskies won the first seven meetings.
 
The Goaltenders:
Saint Joseph's: Morgan Wright (1-2), 60:00, 13 goals allowed, 14 saves
Southern Maine: Lydia Laslavic (3-2), 60:00, eight goals allowed, six saves
 
How It Happened:
  • Southern Maine opened the game on a 4-0 run with Black scoring 1:04 into the contest to kick things off. Kinney then set up Gatchell in front of the net for the score and Black scored again on a feed from Kinney to force a Monks' timeout less than five minutes into the game. D'Appolonia extended the lead to 4-0 before Dumond got the Monks on the board with 8:14 left in the quarter.
  • The second quarter saw another 4-0 run as Laslavic and the Huskies blanked the Monks in the period. Byers and Hill scored up-goals less than a minute apart with Gatchell providing the assist on Byers' score. D'Appolonia then scored an impressive goal while falling to the turf to make the lead 7-1. Gatchell picked up a loose ball and ripped her second goal of the game 30 seconds later to make the score 8-1.
  • The trade traded goals twice in the third quarter with D'Appolonia netting both goals for the Huskies and Dumond and Melanson scoring for the Monks to send the game to fourth quarter with the Huskies ahead 10-3.
  • Gatchell converted a free-position attempt to extend the lead to 11-3 before two goals in 1:02 by Siebert and Drummond cut the lead to 11-5 with 7:49 left to play. Byers won the next draw control and got the lead back to seven with her second goal of the game off a pass from D'Appolonia.
  • Siebert and Melanson got the Monks with four goals at 12-8 with 3:29 to go. Siebert scored twice in the run while Melason had the other goal and an assist on Siebert's second score. D'Appolonia won the draw control that followed and the Huskies ran the down the clock before Hill provided an insurance goal with 2:06 left.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Byers and D'Appolonia combined for 13 draw controls and the Huskies led 17-8 in the category. Sophomore Lizzy Hallee (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills) had two as well.
  • The Huskies led 28-25 in ground balls. D'Appolonia, Hill and Gatchell led the way for the Huskies with four each and played tight defense with 10 combined caused turnovers.
  • Sophomore Ashley Tobias (Augusta, Maine/Cony) and junior Britney Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) were also among the defensive leaders for the Huskies with three ground balls and caused two turnovers apiece.
  • Wright led the Monks with six ground balls followed by Shauna Clark with five.
  • The Huskies outshot the Monks 33-19 and led 27-14 in shots on goal.
 
Up Next:
The Huskies will take on another in-state rival in UMaine Farmington on Saturday at 1:00 pm at home.
