Huskies Beat Beacons 2-1 in Overtime on Stewart’s Game-Winner

GORHAM, Maine – Junior Olivia Stewart (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) scored on the rebound of a shot by senior Jess MacLean (Red Point, Nova Scotia) 1:49 into overtime to lift the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-1 win over the UMass Boston Beacons on Friday evening in Gorham. Fifth-year senior goalie Haley McKim (Moncton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) turned in another performance in net with 33 saves. Senior Ally Stymiest (Moncton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) also had a goal for the Huskies.

Southern Maine: Haley McKim (8-9-2): 61:45, one goal allowed, 33 saves

How It Happened:
  • Stymiest scored her 11th goal of the season with 5:23 left in the first period to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Her goal was set up by aggressive defense by freshman Makenzie Woodford (Cornwall, Prince Edward Island/ Mount Academy) to separate a UMass Boston skater from the puck and create an opportunity for Stymiest in front of the Beacons' net.
  • The second period was scoreless with McKim making 11 saves and Hadamovsky stopping seven shots. The Beacons were awarded a penalty shot but McKim stepped up to the task and shut down the shot by Liz Kramp just under seven minutes into the period.
  • The game remained tied until 4:45 into the third period when Morrison scored on the power play. Despite power play opportunities for both teams the period ended with the score still even at 1-1.
  • The Beacons lost possession in their offensive zone which allowed Stewart to collect the puck and cruise down the ice to set up MacLean's shot. The shot was saved but Stewart was able to drive home the rebound to give the Huskies the win.
