How It Happened:
- Teja Andrews scored the first bucket of the game on a strong driving layup to give the nationally-ranked Corsairs an early lead, but the Huskies' Cote answered right back with the first of her four three-pointers in the game setting the tone for a back-and-forth first quarter.
- USM led by five, 13-8, with 4:08 remaining in the first as Cote struck again for three, but Andrews scored four of the Corsairs next five points to make it a 13-all game with just over 2:30 to go. However, the Huskies Shipley and Wiles outscored UMD 5-2 in the final minutes to give USM a narrow 18-15 lead headed into the second. Cote had eight points in the first quarter to pace Southern Maine.
- The Huskies outscored the Corsairs 14-8 in the first five minutes of the second quarter to open up their largest lead of the game, 32-23, with 4:54 until the halftime break. USM was 6-for-7 from the field during that stretch as six different players figured in the scoring led by four points from Wiles. Conversely, UMD was 2-for-9 with Whiteside scoring five points. UMD reversed its fortunes in the next 1:31 with a 7-0 run started by a Whiteside layup and capped by a layup from Mills to make it a one-possession game 32-30 with 1:40 showing. However, Cote canned a three (her third of the first half) the Huskies' final five points of the half to give USM a 37-31 lead heading into the locker room.
- Wiles scored the first bucket of the second half to make it a 39-31 Husky lead early in the third; however, the Corsairs strung together a 13-0 run over the next 3:26 to leap ahead 44-39. Shooting 5-for-7 from the field (2-for-2 from three) as a team in the run, Whiteside scored six of her game-high 24 in the surge.
- Husky sophomore Lita Gusles (Ikškile, Latvia) scored a layup to stop the Corsair run, but UMD continued to score at will and snagged its largest lead of the game, 50-41, on back-to-back threes from Mills with 4:10 left in the third. However, the Huskies fought back and closed the quarter on a 9-0 run to head into the fourth quarter with the game locked up at 50-50. Four different players scored in the run, including a Cote' three, and a game-tying bucket in the paint from sophomore Emma Stred (South China, Maine/Erskine Academy) in the closing seconds.
- Senior Maria Degifico (South Portland, Maine) scored the first bucket of the fourth with a floating jumper to give the Huskies a 52-50 lead on their first possession but the Corsairs battled back again taking a 56-52 lead with 7:49 to play on a three from Melanie Demeo. UMD continued to stay in front and led 60-54 on a layup from Mills with 6:45 to go.
- Facing a two-possession deficit with time winding down, Shipley got hot and canned a three while being fouled for a quick four-point swing to make it a 60-58 game. After a blocked shot from Guslens on the defensive end, Shipley connected on another three to give USM a slim 61-60 with just over five to play. Whiteside asserted herself for the Corsairs scoring the next five points of the game, including a traditional three-point play, to give the lead back to her team 65-61 with 4:05 to go.
- Southern Maine continued to battle and took the lead for good, 69-67, on a traditional three-point play from Shipley as part of an 8-2 run with 35 seconds remaining. Wiles scored the other five points for USM in the pivotal run.
- After a missed possession the Corsairs were forced to foul, and Southern Maine closed the game out on the line while outscoring UMD 5-1 in the closing seconds for the 74-68 final.
