Huskies Shutout Falcons on Senior Day 5-0

GORHAM, Maine – Four Huskies had multiple points as the University of Southern Maine defeated Albertus Magnus College 5-0 to sweep the weekend series. Junior Saige MacLeod (Dryden, Ontario) scored twice while junior Olivia Stewart (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy), freshman Joely Power (Clarenville, Newfoundland/Mount Academy) and senior Ally Stymiest (Moncton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) each had two assists. Senior goalie Ellie Fredenburg (Cambridge, Mass./ Cambridge Rindge and Latin) made 15 saves to improve to 3-0 on the season and record her third career shutout.
 
Senior Madelyn McLeish (Dedham, Mass.) and sophomores Ellie Eigner (Bowling Green, Ohio/ South Lyon East) and Shannon Murphy (Pembroke, Mass./Brewster Academy) scored goals as well. 11 total Huskies recorded points in the win.

The Huskies outscored Albertus Magnus 8-0 over the weekend series.
 
The Goaltenders:
Albertus Magnus: Christmas Johnson (3-12-2): 60:00, five goals allowed, 25 saves
Southern Maine: Ellie Fredenburg (3-0-0): 59:41, no goal allowed, 15 saves
 
How It Happened:
  • Eigner scored the only goal of the first period after Johnson could not control the rebound of a shot by Stewart. Murphy assisted on the goal as well. The goal came with less than two minutes remaining in the period.
  • The Huskies took control of the game with three goals in the second period. MacLeod potted the first two with the second coming on a 5-on-3 power play. Her first goal came after a shot by freshman Makenzie Woodford (Cornwall, Prince Edward Island/ Mount Academy) was blocked. Power also assisted on the goal. Stymiest and senior Amelie St-Amant (Ottawa, Ontario/ Ontario Hockey Academy) had assists on the second goal.
  • McLeish scored the Huskies' third goal of the period with assists by Stymiest and Power.
  • The lead was extended to 5-0 when Murphy ripped a shot past Johnson on the power play after passes from senior Jess MacLean (Red Point, Nova Scotia) and Stewart in the opening minutes of the third period.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The game featured 14 total penalties with the Falcons committing 10 and the Huskies committing four. The Falcons were 0-for-4 on the power play and the Huskies converted on two of their opportunities.
  • The faceoffs were tied at 30-30.
  • MacLeod leads the team with 14 points followed by Stewart and Stymiest with 13 each.
 
Up Next:
The Huskies will host UMass Boston next Friday and Saturday in a pivotal series for New England Hockey Conference playoff seeding.
