Suffolk Drops Southern Maine 90-80

Four Players in Double-Figures for Huskies

WATERVILLE, Maine   -  Marquis White scored 29 points to lead all scorers as the Suffolk University Rams defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 90-80, in a non-conference men's basketball contest in the final game of the 2025 Colby College Tip Off Classic at the Margaret M. Crook Center.
 
White was 10-for-14 from the field for the game-high 29, and had a game-high six assists.  Nick Verdile was 7-for-16 for 21 points, while Harrison Neil had 19 points and five rebounds to pace the Rams.
 
Senior Thomas Whelan (Bronx, NY/Fordham Prep) had 20 points on 8-for-12 shooting to lead four Huskies in double figures.  Carter and Cohen Galley (Owls Head, Maine/Kents Hill/Oceanside) each had 12 points, while freshman Gabe Lash (Waldoboro, Maine/Medomak Valley) added 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

Today's game marked the 22nd meeting between University of Southern Maine and Suffolk University, but the first time since the 1990-1991 season in a game won by the Huskies 95-64.  Southern Maine leads the overall series 15-7.
 
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Trailing 34-33 with 6:29 to play in the first half on a layup from Whelan, the Huskies saw their deficit expand to 45-22 over the next 2:27 of play as the Rams executed an 11-0 run.  White had six of Suffolk's 11 points.
  • Two free throws from Lash and a layup from Whelan made it an eight-point game, 45-37, over the Huskies next two possessions, but the Rams' White scored a traditional three-point play to close out the scoring and put Suffolk up 48-37 at the break.
  • Suffolk continued to grow its lead at the start of the second half, outpacing the Huskies offensively 11-2 in the first three minutes to lead by 20, 59-39, with 16:49 to go.  Verdile had nine points for the Rams.
  • USM found its rhythm over the next 7:30 and cut the Rams lead to a manageable 12 poitns, 72-60, with just over nine minutes to go. The Huskies outscored the Rams 21-13 during that stretch, shooting 50 percent from the field (8-for-16).  Cohen Galley scored 10 of his 12 points during that time frame.
  • Whelan had the Huskies within three possessions, 80-71, with a layup at the 3:19 mark as part of a 6-0 push for USM, but the Rams with four consecutive points to seal the game.
 
Inside The Statistics:
  • Southern Maine shot 47.5 percent (28-for-59) from the field, and 36.4 percent (8-for-22) from three-point range. Suffolk shot 57.9 percent (33-for-57) from the floor, and 52.2 percent from three (12-for-23).
  • Led by 24 combined points from the Galley's USM's bench outscored the Suffolk bench 39-21.
 
Up Next:
Southern Maine remains on the road on Tuesday at Bates College (7:30 pm). The Huskies return to action at home against Saint Joseph's College (Maine) on Sunday, November 30 (6:00 pm) for the Costello Cup.
