The Records:
Southern Maine (2-3)
Bates (5-0)

Today's game marked the 48th meeting between the University of Southern Maine Huskies and the Bates College Bobcats. Southern Maine leads the overall series 29-19; however, Bates has won the last three consecutively, including a 68-66 win in Gorham in 2024.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Trailing by 13 points, 21-8, just over five minutes into the opening half, Southern Maine rallied to make it a one-possession game before the halftime break.  The Huskies nearly doubled up the Bobcats in scoring over the next 10 minutes, 24-13, to trail 34-32.  The Huskies were 9-for-15 from the field during the run led by eight points from Whelan, and seven from Galley.
  • Bates' Cravitz hit a three with 3:36 to play to make it a five-point lead for the home side, but Whelan scored seven of the Huskies' next nine points to tied the game up at 44 with 25 seconds until the break.  Bates was able to take a two-point lead, 46-44, into the lockerroom as Ben Leach hit two free throws in the final second.
  • Bates extended its lead to four scoring a pair of free throws, but USM's Sterling answered with two of his own and the team's settled into a back-and-forth contest.
  • USM used a 7-0 run to snag a 59-55 lead. Dowling tied the game at 55 with a three with 13:29 to play, and freshman Cohen Galley (Owls Head, Maine/Kents Hill/Oceanside) scored the next four on back-to-back layups with 11:54 for a four-point lead.
  • Bates countered with a 7-0 run of its own over the next 1:45 to slip ahead 62-59 with just under 10 to go. Whelan connected on a layup for the Huskies to stop the run, 62-61, but the Bobcats Jamari Robinson and Cravitz sandwiched threes around a layup from Carter Galley to push the lead to 68-62 with 8:10 to play.
  • Sterling made it a one-possession game, 68-65, with a layup, but both teams exchanged scores with a jumper from Pouye keeping it a five-point difference, 72-67, with 5:43 left.
  • Carter Galley nailed a layup up for the next bucket of the game at the 4:13 mark, 72-69 Bates, but the Bobcats continued to have an answer – this time with a three from Coyne.
  • With just under three to go, Whelan converted a traditional three-point play for a 75-72 game in favor of the Bobcats, but it was as close as USM would get the rest of the way. Bates ended the game on a 5-0 run, going 3-for-3 from the free throw line.
