Southern Maine Cruises Past UMaine Presque Isle 82-64

Five Huskies in Double Figures


PRESQUE ISLE, Maine  - Senior Thomas Whelan (Bronx, NY/Fordham Prep) scored 18 points and had seven rebounds to lead five players in double figures as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the UMaine Presque Isle Owls 82-64 in a non-conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Wieden Gymnasium.
 
Whelan was 7-for-16 from the field with two assists and three steals for the Huskies.  Graduate student Andrew Hartel (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Kimball Union) added 14 points on an efficient 7-for-9 shooting effort, while freshman Gabe Lash (Waldoboro, Maine/Medomak Valley) added 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds.  Sophomore Evans Sterling (New Sharon, Maine/Mt. Blue) tossed in 11 points on 4-for-5 shooting, and sophomore Noah Dowling (North Narrabeen, Australia) added 10 points and eight rebounds off of the bench.
 
Yuki Ishibashi led UMPI with 13 points off of the bench, while James Yamashita had 11 points.  Aleix Moreno, Akhe McMichael, and Tyson Enget each had eight points.

Today's game marks 17th game in the series between University of Southern Maine and UMaine Presque Isle.  Southern Maine leads the series 16-2. . Southern Maine has won 11 straight over the Owls, including a season-opening 100-96 win during the 2024-2025 season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Ahead by just two possessions, 23-17, with 10:50 remaining in the first half, the Huskies outscored the Owls 32-18 to head into the locker room up 53-35. After Yuki Ishibashi hit three free throws to make it a 23-17 game, Southern Maine rattled off eight unanswered points to jump ahead 31-17.
  • Back-to-back buckets from Ishibashi had the Owls back to within 10, 35-25, with 5:47 on the clock, but the Huskies countered with a three from Dowling and back-to-back layups form Sterling to balloon its lead to 17, 42-25 with just over four to go.
  • An offensive rebound and tip in from Carter Galley (Owls Head, Maine/Kents Hill/Oceanside) with 2:55 left in the half made it 49-29 in favor of the Huskies and both teams traded baskets to end the half at 53-35 USM.
  • UMPI made a run at the Huskies to start the second half and outscored Southern Maine 17-5 in the first five minutes of the second stanza to trail by six, 58-52.  James Yamashita led the way for the Owls draining three three-pointers in the run.
  • A three from Whelan stopped the run, but UMPI stayed within striking distance and trailed the Huskies 70-60 with 7:31 to play following a layup from Tyson Enget.  However, Hartel, Whelan, Dowling and Lash combined for six unanswered points to give the Huskies breathing room at 76-60 to go. From there, USM outscored the Owls 6-4 to close the game for the 82-64 win.
 
Inside The Statistics:
  • Southern Maine shot 48.4 percent (30-for-62) from the field for the game and held the Owls to 37.9 percent (22-fro-58) shooting.
  • Led by Lash's nine rebounds, the Huskies had a 40-35 lead on the boards. 
 
Up Next:
Southern Maine remains on the road at Emmanuel College on Wednesday, November 19 (5:30 pm). The Huskies will then compete in the Colby College Classic Tip Off Tournament Friday, November 21 and Saturday, November 22.
