GORHAM, Maine - Sophomore
Lucy Wiles (Glenburn, Maine/Hampden Academy) led the way with 24 points as three players scored in double-figures as the University of Southern Maine Huskies opened its 2025-2026 season with a 76-58 win over the University of New England in a non-conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at Hill Gym.
Wiles was 8-for-13 from the field (3-for-5 from three) for the game-high total. Sophomore
Dakota Shipley (Bath, Maine/Brunswick) stuffed the stat sheet with 18 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots on 8-for-10 shooting. Senior
Jaycie Christopher (Skowhegan, Maine) added 18 points and six rebounds in her Husky debut. Senior
Avah Ingalls (Hampstead, NH/Pinkerton Academy) had a strong game with six points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
UNE's Sydney Jenisch shot 9-for-19 (4-for-9 3pt) for a team-high 23 points, while Maddy Werner added 10 points on 4-for-11 shooting. Kaia Anderson had eight points, five rebounds nad two assists off of the bench.

Today's game marked the 55
th meeting between the University of New England and the University of Southern Maine. The Huskies lead the overall series 40-14, but UNE had won the last three games consecutively. Tonight's win is the first for Southern Maine since defeating the Nor'easters 67-53 on November 11, 2021 in Gorham.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Jenisch scored the first points of the game draining a three for a 3-0 UNE lead, but the Huskies rattled off 11 unanswered and never gave up the lead. The Huskies first three baskets of the season were consecutive threes from Christopher, Wiles, and graduate student Liz Cote (Conway, NH/Kennett) to lead 9-3 with 6:50 to play, before Shipley scored her first bucket of the game for an 11-3 lead with 6:06 to go.
- A UNE bucket fr0m Ella Karavanic stopped the Husky run at 11-5, but USM scored the next seven straight and led 18-5 on layup from Shipley late in the quarter. Karavanic scored again for UNE but the Huskies closed on a 4-0 run to lead 22-7 after the first quarter.
- UNE's offense came alive in the second and the Nor'easters outscored the Huskies 20-13 in the frame to trail 35-27 at the halftime break. Kaia Anderson scored back-to-back threes for UNE opened with an 11-5 run in the first five minutes to trail by nine, 27-18, with 5:18 to play following a jumper from Hannah Cook. A three from Shipley pushed the game back to double-digits, 30-18, but the Nor'easters closed the half outscoring USM 9-5 for the 35-27 halftime score.
- In a slow third quarter for both sides, Southern Maine came out on top 17-13 and led 52-40 headed into the fourth. Jenisch had the Nor'easter deficit down to two possessions, 44-38, with 3:53 to go in the third with a three, but the Huskies' Ingalls responded with a three of her own on the next possession and Southern Maine closed the quarter on a 5-2 run to lead by 12.
- USM ballooned its lead to 18, 58-40, with a 6-0 run to start the fourth on layups from junior Lita Guslens (Ikškile, Latvia), junior Campbell Doughty (Ashland, Va./Hanover) and Wiles. Trailing the Huskies 65-48 with 5:51 on the clock following a Christopher three, Werner scored the next six for UNE to make it a 13-point deficit, 65-54, with just under four to play, but the Huskies closed on a 9-4 run for the 75-58 final.
Inside The Statistics:
- Southern Maine shot 48.1 percent (26-for-54) from the field, and was 40.9 percent (9-for-22) from three. UNE shot 36.7 percent (22-for-60) from the floor and went 8-for-22 from three. UNE was held to 3-for-16 shooting in the first quarter to trail 22-7.
- Southern Maine had a 38-28 lead in rebounds. Shipley (8), Ingalls (7) and Christopher (6) led the way for Southern Maine.
- USM dominated the paint outscoring UNE 30-12. Both teams had 11 points off of turnovers. Southern Maine committed 17 turnovers in the contest, while UNE had 15.

Southern Maine is on the road for its next three contests, heading to UMaine Presque Isle on Saturday (2:00 pm), Emmanuel College on Wednesday (7:30 pm) and then at nationally-ranked Bates College on Tuesday, November 25 (5:30 pm).
