Myers Header the Difference in Bowdoin 1-0 Win Over Southern Maine

Wagner Makes Season-High 11 Saves

GORHAM, Maine  -  Liam Myers headed in his first goal of 2025 in the fourth minute and it was enough for the Bowdoin College Polar Bears to earn a 1-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's soccer game Tuesday night at Hannaford Field.

Sophomore goalkeeper Gabe Wagner (Freeport, Maine) put on a show for the Huskies making 11 saves and several critical clearances during the contest.

Tonight's game marked the 44th meeting between the University of Southern Maine and Bowdoin College. Bowdoin leads the overall series 37-4-3. The Huskies last defeated the Polar Bears on September 17, 2008, 3-1, at home. USM fell to the Polar Bears, 7-0, in Brunswick in 2024.

How It Happened:
  • Pressuring early, Bowdoin earned the first of its 11 corner kicks in the game 2:59 into the contest.  Taking the service Tyler Huck lofted a well-placed ball to the far post side of the box and Myers headed in the goal for a 1-0 lead with just 3:20 gone in the game.
  • Bowdoin continued to threaten for a second goal in the opening half, but Wagner and the Huskies' defense were able to keep the Polar Bears off the scoresheet. Wagner made back-to-back saves in the 15th minute, and finished the first half with five of his 11 saves.
  • Wagner continued to play outstanding in net for the Huskies in the second half, punching away several crosses and making six more saves to finish with his season-high 11.
  • The Huskies registered their first shot and first shot on goal in the final seconds of the game as freshman Peter Thelander (Bristol, Maine/Lincoln Academy) subbed on and laced a near-post shot in the 90th minute forcing Bowdoin's Oliver King to dive to his right and make a save to prevent the equalizer.
