Huskies Fall to Seahawks 4-0 in Season Opener

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – The University of Southern Maine men's ice hockey team was defeated 4-0 by the Salve Regina University Seahawks 4-0 in their first game of the season. Salve Regina had goals from four different players in the win. Freshman goalie Loic Morin (Drummondville, Quebec) made 33 saves for the Huskies in his intercollegiate debut.
 
Senior Kadin Ilott (Kenora, Ontario/Beaver Brae Secondary School), junior captain Ethan MacDuff (Lloydminster, Alberta) and sophomore Owen Arend (Palmetto, Fla./Kents Hill School) tied for the team lead in both shots on goal with four. Ilott and MacDuff each blocked two shots.

Series History:
Tonight's win by the Seahawks is their first against the Huskies in seven games. Southern Maine swept the season series last year with a pair of 3-2 overtime wins.
 
The Goaltenders:
Southern Maine: Loic Morin (0-1-0): 57:24, four goals allowed, 33 saves
Slave Regina: Selby Warren (1-0-0), 60:00, no goals allowed, 26 saves
 
How It Happened:
  • The Seahawks opened the scoring shorthanded tally by Jonathan Hammel with less than four minutes left in the first period. Salve Regina led 17-8 in shots on goal in the period.
  • The hosts added two more goals in the second period to extend the lead to 3-0. The first came from Aidan Connolly just under 90 seconds into the period with Cade DeStefani providing the assist. Logan Calder then scored on the power play 10 minutes later to make the lead 3-0. Teddy Hember was credited with the assist.
  • Salve Regina made the score 4-0 with a goal from Matthew Brunton about halfway through the third period.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The teams combined for 12 penalties with the Huskies committing seven and the Seahawks committing five. The Seahawks converted one of their six power play opportunities while the Huskies went 0-for-4.
  • The Seahawks led 37-26 in shots on goal.  
  • Juniors Owen Drummey (Falmouth, Maine) and Ethan Hoover (Hershey, Penn.) each won nine faceoffs to lead the Huskies.  
 
Up Next:
The Huskies will host Saint Anselm College tomorrow evening at 6:00 pm in the USM Ice Arena in their first home game of the year.
